Q: Blood diseases from tattoo ?

My son got a tattoo yesterday. How soon should we have him tested for hepatitis and other diseases? I hear that you CAN contract blood diseases from the ink even if it is a new sterile needle. I don't know how long the incubation period is, if any, for Hep viruses. Please help!

Let me ask you a question -- why do you suspect that he has contracted something?

If you have reason to be worry, then you can usually detected the hepatitis C virus within 1-3 weeks and the HIV around week 4 through a (Polymerase chain reaction) PCR test. This is very expensive test.

Otherwise you can wait 3 months to have an antibody test done. By this time, if an individual has been infected they most likely would have sero-converted.

Hepatitis C can sometimes be cured, particularly if it is caught early, through interfon treatments. Most healthy individuals are able clear the Hepatitis B virus without medical intervention. There is of course effective treatment options for HIV but no cure.

Please define "sero-converted". Are you a physician?

theFav,

Seroconversion is the development of detectable specific antibodies to microorganisms (e.g. Hep C, HIV) in the blood serum as a result of infection or immunization.

The outshoot is if you are worry, go see your PCP immediately and talk to him about ordering up a set of PCR tests for your son. This could give you the peace of mind that you are seeking.

Like I said in your other identical post, they are supposed to change the ink when they change the needles. Go there and check the place out before you take him to the doctor and scare him to death.
