Q: Blood Clot and Stillbirth

Hi,

I had a stillbirth 2 months ago with my baby boy at week 38. The testing report came back indicating that I had 2 blood clots on my placenta, one old one and one fresh one as they said. The doctor suspects that this had caused problems in the flow of supply to the baby which then caused his death. The baby is checked totally normal with normal weight and length, as well as normal size and weight of each organ, except that the liver is much smaller than the shouldbe size.

This is such a strike on me. I never knew I have problems with blood clot. The doctor has ordered a blood work for me in 2 weeks time which is about 2 to 3 months after the birth to see if I might have blood clot problem as in ordinary (non pregnant) conditions.

I asked her how, if in case I have a future pregnancy, this would be prevented. She said that I have to take some kind of aspirin or an injection EVERYDAY of my pregnancy as a preventive measure. Same time they will have a tight control check on me, basically to have more regular ultrasound and later on to have doppler to exam the flow of the supply through the cord.

I can not imagine on top of the stress of the pregnancy, one has to have some kind of injection EVERYDAY. I did not quite understand what it is and how it really works, and would it have any side effects.

Could anyone know and tell me? Am I simply not suitable to have another pregnancy if I do have some kind of blood clot issues? (The doctor said even if it is found out that I do not, due to this stillbirth experience, they would still carry out some preventive measures like taking aspirin).

Anyone has any experience to share?

Sad and anxious,
Anna

If you have a clotting problem, the doctors will most likely want you to be on baby aspirin and possibly take heparin injections. They may or may not be daily, depending on what type of clotting issue is found. As long as the heparin is given in the right dosage, you should be fine. Vitamin D, Calcium, and Folate should ALL be taken while on heparin because it can cause bone density loss. As long as you are taking these vitamins, the loss is usually minimal to none. Talk to your doctor to outweigh the risks and benefits of becoming pregnant. But no, blood clotting issues are NOT a sentence to being a childless woman. And depending on the severity of the issue, if one is found, you may indeed be very suitable to have another pregnancy. Best of luck Smile
