Q: Bloating and indigestion
asked by: DoctorQuestion on October 14th, 2009
I am 50 years old female. I have no chronic desease and I had felt mild livable bloting and indegistion for a year. Maybe. For the past year, I experienced feeling sick at night( before bedtime).I start feeling sick from stomach and then whole body. When I took pepto bismol liquid for multi symtom, I slowly feel better. But this time it took longer. In the future, if this medicine does not work, do I need got to ER for pain relief or will it go away after the suffering eventully.?Or Would you have any other (prefer natural)medicine for rescue? I have no insurance and wondering what the doctor's thought for my case? what does it seems like?Did you heard about this kind of symtom? or am I the only one? Or what can I try?

Thank you for your kind help
Worried and fearful

Hi, and thanks for your medical question on eHealth's Ask a Doctor forum.

Your symptoms of bloating and indigestion can be due to a number of causes such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, Celiac disease (gluten intolerance), lactose intolerance or IBS or irritable bowel syndrome. However it could also be due to severe acidity. You can discuss these possibilities with your doctor as on net and without examining it is difficult to give a confirmed opinion.

Treatment is a combination of drugs to reduce the acid and lifestyle changes. Omeprazole is a good drug to combat this. Along with it you can try over the counter antacids. However I would recommend you see a doctor and take medication under a doctor’s supervision. Avoid heavy meals. Avoid too much of caffeine, tea, fried food and drinks both alcoholic and non alcoholic fuzzy ones. Avoid heavy exercises within 4 hours of a heavy meal. Raise the head end of the bed by pillows to 30 degrees. Go to bet at least 2 hours after food. Maybe these tips will help you. Alternatively if this does not help you, you can try going off lactose or gluten, one at a time to see if they are the cause.

You should consult a gastroenterologist (a specialist who looks after the diseases of our digestive system) or a physician for this if these tips reduce your symptoms. Hope this helps. Take care!
