Q: Blister on gum

About 8/9 years ago I got a blister on my gum, just like a small clear bubble that lasted about a month and then went away, it felt slightly sore, but nothing really bad, it has come back the past 2 winters though and lasts again about a month before going flat where you can't tell it was there at all (if you look, you can kind of see the shape where it was), is this an abscess or does it sound like a cold sore/ fever blister, I have had regular dental check ups but never mentioned it.

Mouth ulcers are caused by many disorders. These include canker sores, leukoplakia, gingivostomatitis, oral cancer, oral lichen planus, oral thrush, and similar disorders.

Are you trying to diagnose the problem to prevent it from happening again? Or just out of curiosity?

Because I am terrifed it will be an abscess or something, and I am PETRIFIED of the dentist, even though I have never had anything done there!

I see. Are the symptoms present now? Plus, you don't need to see a dentist, you can go to an ENT specialist (ear, nose, throat) who can also help you. Why do you think that you might have an abscess?

Just because every time I google 'recurring spot on gum' and things like that, it always says its an abscess, I have no tooth pain and have had regular check ups and everythings been fine, the spot isn't up at the moment and hasn't been since the very start of the year but if you pull my mouth up you can see the shape of where it was.

Thanks for the replies by the way!

Sure thing. It's good to check up on your health and I can tell that you're concerned.

And are you finding a gum abscess or a tooth abscess?

The main symptom of a tooth is a severe toothache. The pain is continuous and may be described as gnawing, sharp, shooting, or throbbing.

Other symptoms may include:

* Bitter taste in the mouth
* Breath odor
* General discomfort, uneasiness, or ill feeling
* Fever
* Pain when chewing
* Sensitivity of the teeth to hot or cold
* Swollen glands of the neck
* Swollen area of the upper or lower jaw -- a very serious symptom

I'm not sure if a gum blister is an indication of a tooth abscess, but might be associated with gum disease. On second thought, do you have a friend or family member who can go with you to the dentist's office when the blister occurs for a diagnosis?

I have none of those other symptoms, yes I am worried, but thats probably because I actually suffer from health anxiety and have even had counselling over it for obsessing over my health.

The only symptom I am experiencing is the actual blister itself which has only ever appeared in the winter, so it must be related to the cold weather.

When I go to the dentist, I literally want to get out of the chair as quick as possible, I have regular check ups and have had bitewing x-rays and I have never had a problem with my teeth, the blister never oozes anything, it just looks pretty clear and feels a bit sore, then it goes flat.

I see. That makes more sense. Fear and anxiety can alter our perception. When's your next dental check up?

3 weeks today, I usually tend to get full on worry mode over this issue before every appointment but of course I wouldn't dare mention it when I am there, I have never had a tooth out and honestly would be TERRIFIED if I had to.

They can also put you under general anesthesia for larger extractions. I'd suggest that you take a friend of family member who can sympathise with your worries with you to your next appointment. Good luck and let us know how it goes!
