what do you think it is? Can a self treat or do I need to go see dr. I have three little kids so dr. visits are difficult for me.

According to your symptoms (swollen, painful and red only one eyelid) you could be experiencing acute eyelid infection (blepharitis). Blepharitis is often provoked by an infection of oil or sweat glands found in the eyelid (chordeolum). You will probably need a local antibiotic combined with corticosteroid (eye-drops).
You may want to visit your GP to confirm the diagnosis.
