Q: bleeding 6 weeks after D & C

Help! I found out my pregnancy wasn't viable on April 23, and had a d&c on April 26. Since then, I've been bleeding non-stop, some days heavier than others, but always constant and every day passing clots of some sort. I had an u/s one week after the d&c, and another one 2 weeks after that. Both times, I was told everything is fine, my uterus looks clean.

I called my doctor again this past week, since I was, um, still bleeding!! They did another u/s - again, they said everything looks fine. They also took blood and found hcg levels were still at 35, which means there's something in there, they just can't see it. They told me I'm just healing at a different pace and that I should wait it out.

I'm sorry, it's been 6 weeks and I'm going crazy!! I thought a D&C was supposed to help prevent this endless waiting. Has anyone else experienced something like this? Are there any recommendations to help move this process along? I just want it all to be over!! Sad

According to your story you probably had missed abortion so doctors performed dilatation and curettage (D&C) to remove the death embryo/fetus. If they removed the whole fetus together with the placenta and its coverings the HCG test should be negative 2 weeks after the D&C. If HCG test is still positive even 6 weeks after D&C that means that something from the fetus was left inside the womb (placental residua). That residua is the probable reason for this bleeding. Bleeding won't stop as long as there is some placental residua present inside the womb. Placental residua may not be always seen on ultrasound scan. You may need another curettage to stop the bleeding.
You should consult some gynecologist about this.

Pregnancy test still shows positive 4wks after D&C
A D&C was done on 23rd August 2008. After the D&C the following week, she had cramps and was bleeding regularly. On the 4th Sept. an u/s was done. The u/s technician did not report a pregnancy. However there were many follicles on the ovaries. We went back to the gynaecologist and he prescribed Provera. Before she started taking the Provera (about a day or 2 after doing the u/s) she had stopped bleeding.

Anyhow a pregnancy test was done on 17th Sept. and it showed positive. Is she really pregnant?? Or is it that there is still HCG hormone present? How long would it take for the HCG hormone to leave her system?

Its my understanding that HCG comes from the placenta, it keeps the corpus leuteum intact so it continues to release progesterone to keep the lining attached until about 9 or so weeks. If the placenta is gone I dont see how she would still be releasing HCG. Although I believe I read somewhere after an abortion that a pregnancy test would should up positive for a short time after.
I would leave a message for the nurse at the office of her d and c
