BACKGROUND ON MYSELF: I'm a 24 year old female...I'm really pale/light-skinned and have many freckles and moles all over my body. I've also had severe sunburns over my lifetime.

MY OBSERVATION: Just last night, I noticed a black mole in the center of my back that I've never seen before. It was bleeding as well, but before that I was kind of itchy so I had scratched my back. But I'm kind of nervous about it. I had my boyfriend look at it, since it was kind of difficult for me to see clearly and up close. He told me it was a dark brown, not quite black. And it doesn't have any rough/jagged edges. But it kind of hurts...not too bad, but I can definitely feel it...quite possible it was from scratching it, who knows. Yet I've never seen it up until last night. I DON'T HAVE MEDICAL INSURANCE. I LIVE IN VANCOUVER, WA. And I don't know where to go to get screened or have a doctor look at this. PLEASE HELP. THANKS.

Hi Tamuril and welcome to ehealth: Chances are that you scratched this and that is why it is bleeding...Just keep an eye on it...Usually when these get active and show different colors and shapes is when you should be concerned...If I were you I would look under Skin Cancer where they show how Melanoma looks when it occurs...The mole or growth gets kind of ugly...This should be a reference for anyone with a question on this sneaky and life threatening problem...

I think you were wise in checking on this...If I were you I would have my doctor check my body over carefully on your next physical...Anyone who is pale skinned and has spent a lot of time in the Sun in youth should also be checked by a Dermatologist yearly...In the long run it is cheap insurance for a life threatening skin cancer....Good luck and take care...
