Research on the Pine Nut Syndrome
Hi readers!

I'm a food scientist in the Netherlands and I've just begun investigating this issue of the pine nut syndrome. Your replies here have been very helpful, but I would like to find out more about what you are experiencing in order to get a better view of the issue. Also, if you still have remaining pine nuts from the package that caused the taste disturbance, I would very much like to obtain it for analysis too. Please write me, your assistance is very much appreciated in this research! Thank you!!

Best regards,
Grace Tan

pine nuts
Hi there - I can probably get some of the pine nuts that I think affected me. I had a small pot of mixed seeds and nuts yesterday lunchtime and by tea time, everything tasted awful. It goes away if I eat and drink nothing but then comes back whenever I eat or drink. Seems to have peaked this morning so I hope it gets better. I am also a smoker and cigarette smoke really makes it bad. Let me know your address and I can try to send some to you.

Wow so glad I found this. I have a stomach disorder that causes acid and do sometimes get a horrible taste from that. However last couple of days it has been really bad. And the taste was different. I thought my stomach had gone totally bad and was panicking.

Then I read this - I ate home made pesto with LOTS of pine nuts in it two days ago! I first noticed it when I thought an avocado I was eating was off. I complained of the strong strange taste to my husband and he replied that the taste normal.

Some foods taste okay at the time of eating but then the taste comes back really really bad after I have eaten whereas other foods taste bad straight away.

The worst thing is this cordial we have - last night in bed I kept drinking it as I have also been really thirsty from this taste but it tasted so bad afterwards I thought it was off.

The only things that taste ok are things drowned in vinegar or salt! So oven chips have become a bit of a staple. I cant stand the taste of most fruit or anything sweet it makes the bitterness worse!

I hope to god this goes away soon as I already find it hard to eat properly due to my stomach issues and now food tastes dire. Lets hope it does go away after a week or so!

All food tastes bitter
That's it! I bought a bag of pine nuts and have been eating them like candy. I was at the point of going to the Chinese herbalist, convinced that something was terribly wrong with me. Nothing was the same. I, like the rest on this forum had a bitter taste for days no matter what I ate, drank, (I was convinced a very good wine was spoiled). I so glad to know what it was now. I bought my nuts at Trader Joes...

Bitter taste in foods
I've have a bitter taste regardless to whatever I eat. The sweeter the food suppose to be, the bitter the taste. I've had this condition for well over a year now. And worst of all, no one, not even doctors can pinpoint the problem.I've never eaten pine nuts.

I have been having a bitter taste in my mouth for about two years. I went to see all kinds of specialists, but nobody could help. An allergist said that I have an allergy to dust and pollen. I was asked to get shots every week. In order to get cured by 50%, I had to have six months of treatment. I didn't go for it.
I have no idea what "pine nuts" are. I don't think that I had any pine nuts.
I can remember eating some artificially flavored candy just before this problem started. Also, I was at the dentist and they did a deep cleaning with irrigation just before this bitter taste started in my mouth.

I wonder whether this will ever go away.

When I lie down, the bitter taste is reduced. In the morning, when I wake up, the bitter taste is minimum.

Pine Nuts / Bitter taste - UK
Glad I stumbled on this website - have had the bitter taste now for 3 days since eating pine nuts. Having dentist work for a new crown and thought the old filling was leaking until I checked with my Dentist and he had not heard of it before. It must be pine nuts as I bought some the weekend for the first time and got teh bitter taste a day or so after eating some of them raw. Purchased at Sainsburys in the UK.

Same symptoms, have been toasting pine nuts purchased at Trader Joe's, package says they are sourced from Russia and/or Korea. Perhaps it is not the country of origin, but a particular species of pine? Am grateful to all who have posted, as i can now stop eating them to see if the symptom will go away in a week or two.

Bitter Taste in back of mouth when eating
Soooo glad to have found this site! Have had a bitter taste in back of mouth for several days now, don't notice when I'm not eating but as soon as I eat anything it's there.

I too ate some pinenuts that I bought recently from Tesco (UK). I love pinenuts and have never had a problem before.

Grace Tan, I have got loads left as the bag was big, do you want to give me your address and I can post some to you.

Chinese Pinenuts
I also have a bitter taste and ate pinenuts a couple of days before it started. Of course they were made in China, although the packaging mentions a "farm" in US.
Waiting for the taste to go away.

Bitter taste
I also got a bitter taste in the roof of my mouth after ingesting only a few pine nuts. I have thrown away the pesto that I made with the rest. And lo and behold the bad pine nuts are from China. I have been making pesto for many years and using pine nuts bought from my shopping club with no problem...do not know where they are from! Taste is worse after eating and goes away after a week or so. I am returning the pine nuts today with explanation to the store...maybe they will do something about it?

Bitter taste

This is unbelievable! I made pesto last weekend for a holiday event and saw the pine nuts were from China prior to purchasing them from an upscale local market, but didn't think a thing about it. I have had the awful bitterness since the day or so after eating some while making the pesto researched possible culprits. I ran across this site and am hopeful that is the problem. Who would have imagined? It has been a week now since any pine nuts and I am hoping this will save me a doctor's visitand it will eventually go away!

Pine Nuts and bitter throat taste
I have been experiencing the sour taste in the back of my throat and the bitter taste of food for the last two days. Until reading about the Pine Nuts I thought I was getting sick. The only change in my eating habit had been eating pine nuts three days ago. I made pine nut cookies and had a couple for myself. The pine nuts did not taste as I had recalled many years ago but I chalked it up to not recalling the original taste. Now that I think about it the pine nuts did have a bitter taste.

Anyway, here I am with a bitter taste in my throat and my food tasting a bit sour or metallic (dirty). I am hopeful it will go away soon so that I can get back to enjoying my coffee and favorite foods.
