Bad taste in mouth
I am so grateful to these posts. I made pesto sauce last week with pine nuts. It's not something that I usually eat. Three days later, I was eating an apple for a snack and it tasted spoiled - very bitter. I assumed it was the apple. Then later, everything else I ate tasted awful. A day later, my husband developed the same problem. I look forward to eating out on the weekends, and there is no point, because everything tastes awful. I hope this goes away soon. I bought natural Pine Nuts. I think the brand was "Melissa's". I find that mouthwash helps, until I try to eat again. Any other suggestions on how to counteract this problem? Thanks!

I'm glad to hear that you found a diagnosis and treatment. I hope that the steroids help...but try to avoid long term use. Maybe you can go in for allergy testing (pin-prick) to identify the possible allergic reaction and avoid that substance. Cut out the cause at the root!

Re: pine nuts
I was trying to figure out why I had this bitter taste too! Thank you sooo much! I bought my pine nuts at Trader Joes and I roasted them before eating them. I wonder if roasting them enhances the bitter taste side effect?? MYSTERY SOLVED thanks to you! Smile

pine nuts
Thanks so much for this - like so many other posters I was getting really worried and thought I should see my GP. I bought some pesto from my local deli - very fresh, expensive, high class product which I was told is made by the same producer of pesto for Carluccios (UK). If that is the case there must be thousands of people with these symptoms - I''m surprised it hasn''t made national news. It''s obviously secreted in saliva because it is always worse during, but particulary after eating - and like others have said, it ruins the taste of wine. I''ve had it for a week now and it is if anything worse today than before. I desperately hope like others on here have said that it goes away eventually - if you really like good food and wine this is a bloody nightmare.

bitter taste in mouth pine nuts
I have eaten pine nuts recently and have been experiencing a bitter taste for about a day now,the pine nuts were consumed two days prior. My husband ate a bunch of them, more than I, and has had no symptoms. Is it that just "some" people are susceptible?

I'm glad I found this page. I too have been experiencing a bitter taste at the back of my mouth and was completely at a miss as to what it was, but as soon as I saw the word Pine Nut I knew exactly what it was, I had a packet of mixed seed and sultana, very nice at the time but now I'm regretting it! The funny thing is, it was the Pine Nuts that I was enjoying the most....Bah!!

bitter taste
I have just been experiencing this phenonmenon with the bitter metallic taste. I was on a cruise ship and was appalled that my Prime Rib tasted so bad... that was the beginning... I have had the bitter taste for 4 days now. I remember eating "something" and thinking ,, "hummmm what is that, pine nuts?" but, for the life of me I can not remember for sure what it was. My next step is to write to the cruise line. Thanks to all of you for your information about the possible cause.

Bitter taste and pine nuts
Thanks so much for your posts! I too had the bitter taste for days, became worried, looked it up and found my answer here and on WebMD. Couldn't believe it! We had pine nuts 4 days ago! When I told my family, my 13 yr. old son said he's had the bitter taste too, but not my daughter or husband who ate the same food. So we checked the package and sure enough, they came from China. FYI - we bought them at Costco. I'm surprised I haven't heard about this before?! I'm so grateful for the web!!! Saved me an office visit.

Bitter Taste in Mouth After Eating Sweets
This is it! I've had the bitter taste in my mouth after eating sweets and fruit for a couple days and yes, I had pine nuts before it started. And I too have never had this problem before and LOVE pine nuts. I also had sunflower seeds (which I RARELY eat) and wonder if they could be the culprit (also?). Anyone have this experience after eating sunflower kernels?

Pine Nuts
Thursday night (5th Aug 2010) I developed a bitter taste in the mouth and could not pin the cause down thought it may be hay fever symptoms or some prawns I ate on thurs evening

The taste is still there today saturday and surfed the www to find the issue with Pine Nuts !

On Tuesday or Wednesday this week interestingly I opened and ate some of a tub of almonds with seeds !!!

Ive just checked the contents and guess what they contain Pine Nuts

Thanks for the info - Dont eat the pine nuts

Oh, I have been fully convinced I was going mad or dying of some horrible disease as I've had this taste in my mouth on and off for 2 weeks...the off part is when I was away for 5 days without my bag of seeds and fruit mix! Just googled the ingredients and guess what? Contains pine nuts! I have been eating these as a subsitute for snacking on rubbish!
I'll be keeping away from that! I'm so glad I found this forum!

Head Injury
My Mum fell over last Xmas, hit the back of her head and has lost the sense of smell and also has this awful taste in her mouth which is affecting her eating habits as she's not eating and lost a lot of weight, she has been to the docs and they have done one MRI scan but nothing unusual has come up. She's also been to the dentist to see if it's anything to do with her teeth but nothing. She's going for another scan soon but she's not optimistic at all and I'm really worried about her. Has anyone had this or know what can be done to help her???

bitterness in back of mouth
I have suffered with this bitter taste for some time now. After googling this problem and finding your responses, I've decided that the pine nuts are the problem. And I went into the freezer to check the bag and they are a product from China. No more!

Bitter taste in back of mouth.
I had dental 2 implants placed 6 months ago, and just had the abutments adjusted in preparation for crowning last Thursday. On Friday I made stuffed grape leaves, and had to buy pine nuts from Safeway. They were small and old-looking with some bits of shell still stuck to them, and they were in a bulk bin priced at 29.99/lb. Ate a few while cooking, and the bitter taste as described above started 2 days later on Sunday. I REALLY hope it is the pine nuts and not the implants, lots of money hangs in the balance! Thanks for the ray of hope!

I have had a bitter taste in my mouth since yesterday (Sat) morning. I had pine nuts a few days back. However, I also accidentally scraped the back of my toungue while tongur scraping after brushing my teeth. I do this everyday, but yesterday I might have gone too far back. Anyone had a similar issue? I hope I didnt permanently damage my taste buds. I'm also starting to feel a little swollen in my throat now. I hope the "scraping" doesnt cause an infection. If anyone has had a similar issue, please help!
