Q: Birth control pills for treating acne
asked by: DoctorQuestion on September 1st, 2008
I am looking for people experienced in Naturopathy/nutrition/alternative healing to answer this question:
I have had acne (not severe) since puberty,14 years ago. I have tried everything and nothing even helps. And then I found the CURE. Yasmin birth control= PERFECT skin. BUT! it also prevented the lining in my uterus from building up, giving me an ulcer and making sex painful. I won't take birth control anymore. But now I know that my acne is hormonal and androgynous.
For the past 2 years, I have kept a detailed journal of my monthly cycle to track fertility, mood and condition of my skin.
It turns out, I have an amazingly consistent pattern. It makes sense to me that someone might be able to tell me what foods to eat when or what supplements or something! if I can show them my pattern (I also have really horrible cramps and notable PMS).
My question is: what field of alternative medicine works with these issues, essentially manipulating hormones naturally - maybe through diet?

Birth control pills, besides preventing pregnancy, are also used for treating acne in women.

It is hard for me to believe that the birth control pills (Yasmin) caused an ulcer in your uterus and made your sex painful. It doesn't seem likely that you can manipulate your sex hormones with natural remedies, supplements or diet.

If you can't stand the birth control pills you can try other medicines for treating acne. You may want to consult a dermatologist about this.

Now that the doctor has failed to answer your question, as you asked for alternative approaches, I will jump in. Hormone imbalances are rampant in our society, and a big reason for this is what we eat and drink. If you live in the U.S., the chances are that your water contains fluoride, which is known to attack the thyroid. The thyroid produces hundreds of different hormones, and so weakening it will lead to unnatural imbalances. I would recommend drinking spring water - do not buy 'drinking water' as it just comes from a tap. On top of that, you should put some iodine on your stomach about the size of a silver dollar. Iodine counters the effects of fluoride. The great thing about iodine is that your body only absorbs the amount that it needs from your skin, at its own pace. If that iodine is gone in less than 24 hours, you are deficient in iodine. You may want to do this regularly. Don't use iodized salt as an alternative, as it is known to cause other health problems. Another thing which destabilizes your hormones is soy, so it would be wise for you to avoid it.

As I am sure that you already know, you should cut down on the sweet products if you are having acne problems. I do believe that you had those problems due to Yaz (contrary to the doctor), as similar problems have been reported about it throughout the internet. Some people have used apple cider vinegar mixed 50/50 with water on their faces to help with acne, and had great results. In depends on each person, but you can try it. Why not?
