Q: Birth control pills causing panic attacks ?

I am 28 years old and just recently started taking birth control pills. My doctor
recommended I take them because of my hormones being out of whack, as he put it. I suffer from panic anxiety disorder and have now for 10 plus years.

I haven't had a panic attack for at least 6 months or so and all of a sudden started having them again. The only thing that I can recognize as a change would be the taking of the birth control pills. The brand of pills that I am taking is Loestrin 24. Could the pills be causing the panic attacks?

Please reply, especially if you have had the same problem.
Thank you.

Extremely eHealthy
some women do experience increased moodiness and anxiety and anxious feelings due to the pill..I feel like even though I'm on yaz I can sometimes be more emotional than I need to be lol..and I noticed i've become much more impatient and have a lower tolerance of things...coincidence? maybe, but these changes also occurred for me around the time I started the pill, I've learned to deal with it since I'm absolutely paranoid about pregnancy and that in itself would give me a panic attack haha...but, I cant imagine dealing with panic attack on a daily basis...maybe you should talk to you doctor about this and try switching to another pill..if it doesn't go away then maybe the pill isn't the best option for you

Thank you
Thank you for taking the time to reply to my question. I think I will talk to my doctor about it. I just wanted to know mostly that I wasn't the only "one". Thanks again.

I was also put on birth control to help with some hormone problems. I actually have felt much calmer and had fewer attacks since being put on YAZ, but if I miss a day and sometimes during the four placebo pill days I'll feel a little more on edge and have had an attack.
Because of this, I definitely believe that birth control can affect a person's anxiety levels. Diet pills are also notorious for this too. (found that out the hard way)

wow. okay so I'm on the same birth control (loestrin24) and I too have a history of anxiety disorder, mostly mild. Ive been on the pill for about 3months now and I had the worst panick attack Ive ever had about a week ago. ive noticed also Ive become more irritable and maybe even a bit depressed...I thnk the pill has something to do with these things. :/

Me too
I have not had a history of anxiety or panic attacks. I started Loestrin24 in February and had a mild panic attack that month. About a month later, I had a severe panic attack that was extremely traumatic. I had to start going to a therapist. He diagnosed me with panic disorder. My ob gyn and my therapist both told me I probably have a genetic predisposition with panic disorder, but the birth control likely triggered it. I stopped taking the pills the day after the attack and my ob gyn has perscribed me with the progesterone only pill called Errin. I haven't had another panic attack since I stopped the pill, just a lot of anxiety and fear of having another one. Have you switched to another pill? I'm a bit aprehensive to start Errin.

Loestrin 24
My sister was put on Loestrin 24 to clear up her skin, and she has suffered from severe panic attacks the past few weeks. Looks like this is the culprit for these anxiety attacks. I think a lawsuit should be taken against Loestrin 24

I've had a history of panic attacks and anxiety as well. I'm on the Fe reminder pills of my second pack now and have been having panic attack symptoms nearly every night while trying to sleep. I will also have very intense attacks during the day during some circumstances that would have normally had a likelihood of triggering an attack (but these ones are way more intense that I would have otherwise had). I was on Yaz a couple years ago and it made me act like a complete b*tch towards my boyfriend, which is why I decided to try Loestrin (in both instances, I have used the pill for period control--not birth control). While I was on Yaz I never experienced attacks, but it could have just been the panic disorder being dormant.

I have a follow-up appointment with my gyn and will mention the attacks to her and hopefully will find a pill that won't trigger attacks AND will leave me as a civil significant other.

Loestrin 24 changed my life for the worst possible ever while...
I was on Loestrin24 last year (2008) for a total of 6 weeks. I have never in my life had a panic problem nor an anxiety disorder. I am 35 years old and have in the past taken Ortho Tricyclen and OTC Lo.

Loestrin caused the most dibilatating panic and anxiety for me. It was so bad I thought I needed to be put in a mental hospital. It was a 2 week long panic attack. My husband could not even go to work because I was that out of it. Couldn't care for my children. Spent a lot of time going to the ER. My family dr dismissed the Loestrin as the cause, instead prescribing my ambien to sleep, lexapro, as well as valium and xanax. ALL THIS for someone who had NEVER EVER had any of this type of problem before! I lived in total fear that it would happen again to me, but thank God every day that I wised up and realized the only thing that had chenged was me taking Loestrin 24. It has been a year today since I stopped taking that EVIL drug and it took about 2 or 3 weeks to feel halfway normal again. I am thrilled to say that I don't have the anxiety or panic, but maybe post traumatic problems after going through something SO terrifying.

I have been on Loestrin 24 FE for about 5 months now. I have been very depressed and my anxity level has been through the roof. I can cry at the drop of a hat, and I feel like everything in my life is going wrong. I have also experienced many mini panic attacks. I am wondering if it is this pill that is causing all this. Reading the other posts makes me think I should stop taking it. Thanks guys.

Agreed!
No matter what kind of birth control I take, I end up with horrible anxiety and panic attacks. The panic attacks are sometimes so horrible I vomit and shake for hours and hours at night. I've tried six or seven different kinds of birth control, but really, all birth controls use the same hormones, just in different forms, so I've just decided it's not worth my sanity-- I'd rather stay off the birth control.

Loestrin
I have been on Loestrin for about 6 months and have been really fighting off a lot of anxiety/panic attacks. Recently it got so bad that I threw up one day because of it. Now I've been freaking out when I feel anxious because I'm scared that I'm gonna throw up in front of people and look like a freak. Funny that I feel fine when I'm on the non-active pills. I'm on anxiety medication now but I'm going to stop taking Loestrin and see if that is what's causing it.
