Birth control + condoms
Posted: 03-04-08 20:33pm

My boyfriend and I plan on being sexually active. I'm going to go on the birth control pill. I'm kind of paranoid, so I'm just wondering if the pill will be good enough to keep me from getting pregnant (of course if I use it correctly), or does he have to wear a condom as well? (He really doesn't want to.)
Thanks,
Jasmine

If you take the pill correctly then a condom is not necessary. If you feel more secure using the condom as well, then he should really respect your concerns.

Okay thanks!
So, I'm kind of unsure about how the pill works exactly..When is the safest time to have sex when you're on it? When shouldn't you? Or does it matter?

As long as you take it correctly then the pill is effective at all times. I no longer take the pill, just had paragurd inserted, but if I remember correctly the pill is effective after the first 2 weeks. Just to be on the safe side, and to put your mind at ease, I would use a condom as a back up for about a month or longer depending on your comfort level. Like I said above though, if you feel more comfortable using a condom even while on the pill, then that is completely fine.....nobody likes stressing about the what if's! Smile

Lele was right, it's all about what you're comfortable with.

Statistically, you are 99% protected after the first week of pills if you are taking them correctly. Meaning, mostly on time (there's wiggle room with the timing, though) not missing any, not taking antibiotics or St. John's wort, not throwing up within a few hours of taking them, that kind of thing.

But there's nothing wrong with being extra careful, and if you would feel better using condoms, do it!

Lele- how's paragard working for you?

Great thank you! I had it inserted this last Friday...it wasn't too bad, although I was a little crampy for 2 days. Now I feel great with a little spotting. I'm so glad to be done with condoms and pills!

Hey Jasmine,

I agree with the above, if you feel more safer with him using a condom then i think if he was anything of a man he would show u respect and grant you your wishes, as for the pill i think it works within the first week provided as said above if you are taking it on time Smile
