I am 24 years old and have never had extreme acne (always just some breakouts) until this past year, when it became out of control (large cystic acne, sore to the touch, consistent versus breakouts). At about the same time my body hair began to increase from unfair to extreme. The hair on my arms and legs has gotten thicker, coarser, more difficult to shave, as well as on my bikini line, etc.. I have been told not to worry about PCOS, as I am not at all overweight and have regular periods.
In an effort to clear the acne and hopefully the hirsutism, I went to Planned Parenthood to obtain the birth control pill, which was highly recommended to me. I don't have insurance and have recently been laid off, so PP was the most accessible option. I told the nurse my concerns and she simply said "yeah okay well I'm going to write you a script for Lutera, let us know if you have any problems, give it a few months". When I told my sister she told me "that's the pill they prescribe to everyone because it is the cheapest for them".
I looked Lutera (generic for Alesse) up on the internet and found numerous reports discussing its tendency to increase androgenic effects in the body and dozens of reviews in which women taking Lutera experienced extreme increases in acne along with depression and extreme weight gain, all of which disappeared immediately after cessation of the pill.
Does anyone know anything about Lutera and whether I should be taking it, or if it will make my problems worse? I am not afraid to go back in and discuss it with them, but want to make sure I am in the right.... I just don't think she was listening to me, and definitely can't handle the emotional trauma of increased androgenic features and effects, it's been crippling enough on my emotions already.
Thanks so much!
