Is it possible to have bipolar that isn't effected by lack of sleep, certain drugs, etc.? I've heard about prednisone causing symptoms to arise and I was wondering since I have taken it before with no change in moods. Though I've taken Valium and painkillers like Hydros and Demerol and they have no effect on me whatsoever, so I don't know if my body has a problem digesting certain meds or what....

---edit---
K i did just read that prednisone rarely causes mania.
Still comment though on the general question.

First of all, medications effect everyone differently, and secondly, some people are really sensitive to medications and some people aren't.

Just like alcohol- everyone reacts differently and gets affected (drunk) at different rates.

Some people need higher doses then others. I am not familiar with the specific drug you are listing. I take Geodone for my Bipolar. But I have in the past taken Prozac, Lithium, Cymbolta, Stratara, and Rispuderal.

Medication Resistance
Everyone has a different chemical make-up and what works for one may or may not work for another...it's a process of trying to see what works best for you. I am sure if you are working closely with your psychiatrists that the two of you will come up with something that will work well for you.

As to prednisone not causing mania...this medication is a stimulant and will increase the chances of going over if your borderline. I know....they say it can't, but I am here to say that it can and will. My suggestion would be to let your psychiatrist know of any and all medication changes done from other sources so that he or she can adjust and compensate.

One of the biggest hurdles facing psychiatrist's is the lack of information from patients when their doing other medication changes not related to the illness. It's usually discounted as not having any effect, whereas most do have an effect and some combo's can actually kill you.

well I'm wondering if I have some sort of resistance to certain meds. I was on 10mg of Valium, which from what I have researched is the highest dose. It did nothing to me. My demerol I was on didn't do anything. (i just had surgery.) And when I took the prednisone, I was also on antibiotics 3 times a day, Prozac, mood stabalizer, birth control, and I was chugging down cough syrup(I had a bad cold/bronchitis). The cough syrup was codine so I was basically sleeping about 18 hours a day. So I'm wondering if it's possible that I didn't have a reaction to the prednisone because of all of these factors.
