My wife is bipolar, manic only and seems to be doing well without medication. This is what I posted on the epilepsy forum, but with no reply. Does this sound like a bipolar issue?

My wife has never been officially diagnosed but from what she has told me I think she has a form of epilepsy, she is 40 years old now. When she was a teenager, she suffered from full blown physical seizures. She never remembered much, the doctors just treated the symptoms. When she became pregnant at 19, all seizures stopped, completely. The only problem she has had since is that sometimes when she drinks heavily, she will have a memory laps. She wakes up doing something normal but has no memory leading up to that point. During this laps, she acts normal and does normal things. This is only while drinking, never after. She isn't a big drinker. Other info is that she is also bipolar, manic only, no depression at all. She is on no medication for anything except cholesterol and hypertension. Does this sound like epilepsy to anyone? Sound familiar?

Epilepsy does not always follow a predictable course, it may get worse over time or get better.
Some types of childhood epilepsy disappear after the child reaches the teenage years.
Bipolar person can have one or more manic episodes with or without major depressive episodes, or, can have mixed episodes when symptoms of mania and depression occur at the same time.

Does she have memory laps for the things done after waking up in a middle of the night?
Does she communicate with you at that moments?
Is she going back to sleep after finishing certain activities?

She doesn't exhibit those traits. As she explains it, she has never had bipolar depression. A doctor told her that her brain is running much faster than the average brain. I think the doctor wired her up, but no scan of any kind.

Some other things she does... Often enough, she will not remember saying something or even that we had a conversation. This is quite vexing as you can imagine. Another thing is that when she is tired, usually in the evening, she is not a pleasant person to be around. She becomes very crabby. She also sleeps 10 hours a day.

This is all relatively new to me, we haven't been married that long. I'm just trying to understand.
