Q: bilateral sagittal split osteotomy gone bad

I am looking for help for a friend who is at the end of her rope with her situation.

She had a bilateral sagittal split osteotomy that included a plate on the left side of the jaw and three screws on the right side of the jaw. She had rubber bands for one week post surgery. At her one week post-op checkup, the doctor determined that the screws on the right jaw didn't hold or the bones broke so she was wired shut for six weeks. At about 12 weeks post surgery, she's had her incision opened and one of the three right screws were removed, she's suffered bacterial and Candida infections when the infection cleared up and screws were removed, her 80 % numbness of her lower lip to chin when to 100 % numbness and lower jaw has shifted left and forward with no overbite. There's currently a sharp pain in right TMJ.

When she returned to her jaw surgeon and told him about the shifting and numbness, he kind of shrugged and told her she was complicated. She should see her orthodontist for rubber bands. She might regain feeling in her jaw if the nerves enervated. Enervation could occur from use of the jaw. She's having a hard time using her jaw because of the pain and the numbness.

She saw her orthodontist and he said that he could put rubber bands on her braces but he didn't see how it would help. He thought she should go back to her jaw surgeon.

Is there anything anyone can suggest? Physicians that can be recommended in the tri-state area (NJ, NY, CT)?

Thanks in advance!

Dusty
