Everyone has a different pain threshold, but having bilateral hernias repaired under local anesthesia, alone, would be a challenge for most patients (particularly since only a certain amount of local anesthetic can be injected at one time).

This type of surgery is usually done on an outpatient basis, but requires an operating room environment.
