I have acid reflex. I ate a small bite of steak and felt it sitting in my esophogus and due to some discomfort, I took a drink of water to help gulp it down and it did not go down and instead I choked on the water and bile that would not allow me to swallow or to spit out..I lost my breath and a doctor at the restaurant I was at luckily performed the heimlic maneuver 3 times on me and it enabled me to breathe once again.
What caused this to happen..and if he could not get me to breathe..would I pass out and then breathe or would I have died?

Thank you.
This is the scariest happening of my life.

Acid Reflux Answer A34536
Hello,

Welcome to ehealthforum and thanks for writing

According to the symptoms described by you the pain and inability to swallow experienced by you might be due to the food particle choking the wind pipe which caused breathing discomfort. You were lucky to have the doctor there itself as accidental death can occur. It does not seem to be related to acid reflex.

The best way to control the reflex symptoms would be lifestyle changes:
1)Change and develop good dietary habits including, eating several small meals daily.

2)Diet should include fresh fruits, fiber rich foods

3)Avoid spicy foods, fats and fried foods, processed food items.

4)Eat freshly cooked food from whole grains.Don't eat for at least three hours before you go to bed. If you have symptoms at night, try raising the head of your bed.

5)Adopting a sitting upright posture for 1 hr post meals will help in relieving the symptoms.

6)Maintain adequate hydration.

Medication as Nexium 40 is quite effective in controlling reflex symptoms. You can discuss regarding its use with your Physician.

Take care!
