Q: Bartholin gland disorders
asked by: DoctorQuestion on March 3rd, 2009
Hello ,
I was diagnos with Bartholin Cyst back in July 2008 . I had to undergo a surgically procedure as the cyst would keep on coming back by just glancing it . My Obgyn had place a Word Catheter in the open so that the passage wouldn't be blocked again . However it's been over eight months now and fluid still draining out of that passage that was left open . At times after a sexually intercourse it become swollen a little bit , it's not painful , I just squeeze and the fluid would drain out . I have to constantly wear a pantyliner for leakage , this has made me unfortable in my sex life as i feel very insecure with this problem .
Please tell me is this commom , and what I should do , I brought this upto to my OBGYN and he stated that he never really see a situation like my , atleast the open is working , but the fact that I am constantly draining .

Thanks for your advise , I greatly appreciate it.

Assuming that the Word catheter is already removed, the fluid drainage after 8 months might be due to incomplete epithelization of the Bartholin’s gland or an infection that is not over yet. You might want to have a microbiological examination of the draining fluid to determine if there are bacteria present, their type, and the most effective antibiotic that should be given to stop the drainage.

If there is no infection, then marsupialization or even excision of the Bartholin’s gland might be needed. Marsupialization is a procedure in which the wall of the empty cyst is everted and approximated to the vestibular mucosa where it is sutured. Excision is a procedure in which the Bartholin’s gland is completely removed.

You might want to visit your gynecologist for the microbiological examination of the fluid, as well as to discuss which treatment option might be best for your condition.
