Q: Bartholin gland cyst drainage
asked by: DoctorQuestion on April 6th, 2009
I have a bartholin gland cyst which i have had for over a year now. it doesnt cause me any pain and for a very long time was small and didnt cause any problems, so my gyn and i decided to leave it. well recently (past 1-2mos) it has grown in size to about a large marble. it still fluctuates, gets smaller when i have sexual intercourse less often, larger when sex is more frequent. it still is not painful in any way but now b/c its larger, it has does slightly get in the way during sex and become tender afterward. i dont have INS and would like to know if there is any way to get it to drain at home, w/o invasive and expensive surgery? its more of a nuisance than a real problem, but i feel self concious about it and it is ruining my sex life! help!

If a cyst does not empty itself, then surgery is the only way to remove it. Draining by yourself is not recommended, since you might cause inflammation and infection, which might turn into something more serious if not treated.
When the cyst becomes tender after sexual intercourse, you might want to use some over-the-counter anti-inflammatory creams.
If there is no pain and big inflammation then you might try to relax about the cyst.
