While riding my horse exactly one week ago, he accidentally slipped, fell, and rolled onto my right leg. I heard no cracking, popping, or tearing sounds and I experienced SEVERE and burning pain immediately. (The horse weighs approximately 1,000 lbs.) I had to walk on it for a while to get my horse back to the barn, but I immediately applied ice and was taken to the ER. The X-rays showed no fracture. I was given crutches, a knee immobilizer, a prescription for painkillers which did not alleviate the pain, and unclear directions upon release. Currently, I am using the immobilizer constantly and the crutches outside of the house. Without the immobilizer on, I cannot lift my knee or my foot. Is this serious? Also, half of my knee is numb. Any suggestions as to how long I should use crutches/ knee immobilizer? I was told by different ER nurses anywhere from a few days to two weeks. The ER doctor said if I didn't see any improvement after the first week (and also after the second week), I should see an orthopedic surgeon. I'd just like some clarification. Any help at all would be great! Thanks so much!

I would make an appointment to see an Orthopedic Surgeon...When you can't lift your knee, then I believe there is something more serious wrong...This could be and probaably is, an injury that requires surgery...If this is the case, then you are wasting time that could be spent recovering...I feel you are lucky that he didn't cause serious damage to both of you....

Best wishes,
Caroline
