Q: Bad Anxiety treatment

I'm 21 years old and have had anxiety for as long as I can remember. But, the past 6 months it has been REALLY bad. So bad, that a lot of times I just get HORRIBLE panic attacks going into malls or stores and have to leave immediately. When I get an attack I get: Dizzy, visual changes, breathing changes, sweatiness, and just very bad thoughts of me dying. I recently quit my job ~ it was a family business and they always fought and brought me into and it caused me to have bad anxiety and panic attacks there. i just always think i'm dying. i have levoscoliosis and spasms in my neck which gives me these bad sharp pains in my head and i always think i'm having a stroke or heart attack and that i'm going to die.

i really don't understand why it's been SO bad in the past 6 months, I just don't get it. i never thought i was going to have a stroke or die like this.

i've been on ativan and xanax in the past but i really don't like taking that stuff. medicine really scares me.

is there any alternative treatment that can help me? or any medicine that does wonders? i've been to therapists in the past but i have a really hard time opening up to people.

thanks so much for all your help!

I sympathize with you as I have your same symptoms.

Have you tried Cognitive therapy, I help me alot.
And diaphramatic breathing.
good luck

I agree with Steveinsaugus. I was in a cbt group and we used the book by Sam Obitz. Obitz was on meds for years before he got better with cbt. The TEA form thought countering exercise is really helpful and I still use it. I also found it very helpful to read the words of someone that had overcome their problems with anxiety and depression that did not read like a textbook. Meds help a lot of people but I'm glad to be off them and feeling better than ever.

You're not alone. Seek therapy, desensitize, exercise, eat well, consider medication, GET HELP. Don't wait. And remember, you're not alone.

Hi,
I feel for you, I used to be much worse and it changed my whole life from the course it was to take, because while going through this I just couldn't manage.

I understand everything you have said, the way it happens, things affecting it more, the meds and the going in places kicking it off.

I went on herbal stuff, St Johns-wort, Starflower oil and passi-flora. I also got a tape by Albert Smith to help with going out and it did really help me.
I don't know what it was called, he does a whole range of self help and mine was for the panic attacks, I think it was something like " stop panic attacks " if you google it you may find it on ebay cheap, I lost mine and I did the same afew years later when I started to feel bad again. It feels wierd at first but I found by the 4th time I started to listen and within 3 weeks I found myself shopping and doing things he had said without even thinking about it.
He explains about the " flight or fight " response it really does help.

I still get little bouts of anxiety when I am stressed but I have not had a panic attack since doing his tape the first time which was 14years ago.
Please give it ago your life can be so much better than it is right now, I am now happy, married, with 3 kids, I work for myself, nice home and travel all over the world on family holidays. I have been places I never thought I would ever see.

I will check you from time to time if you want to chat

I hope you do well

yes there are many ways to try to control it.
such as listening to music. breathing in deeply.
sitting down & try to not think too much.
those are just things to do on the spot.
bu there are good medications too.
like prozac. which i switched to after taking
lexapro, which was a bad choice, dont choose it!

ive had anxiety attacks all my life too.
& they are getting worse & worse,
but the pills help you stay at a constant calm, content
state throughout the day.
if those dont help. try going to therapy
& talking to a physician about it.
ive had to go through pretty much everyone
trying to get rid of these messed up feelings
