Bacterial vaginosis is a clinical syndrome caused by replacing the normally dominant saprophytic bacterial flora (Lactobacillus sp. etc.) with other conditionally-pathogenic bacterial species (anaerobe bacteria, Gardnerella vaginalis, Mycoplasma hominis, etc.).

These conditionally-pathogenic bacteria species are also normally present in the vagina but their growth and activity are restricted by the saprophytic bacterial flora. The exact cause for bacterial vaginosis is not well known. Bacterial vaginosis is rare in women who don’t have sexual contacts but the role of the sexual transmission is still not understood well. Treatment of the sexual partner has no effect on further prevention. Bacterial vaginosis is indicated with a vaginal discharge but 50% of affected women may have no symptoms. That odor from your girlfriend’s vagina was probably due to bacterial vaginosis.

Referring to your symptoms (burning sensations without discharge) you probably have a slight inflammation of the lower urinary tract (urethritis). It could be due to an infection but also to chemical irritation from that “douch”. I believe that your condition will vanish spontaneously without any medical treatment. You can only drink a lot of liquids. If the burning sensations continue to persist you can consult your primary health provider.
