In 2003 I had an accident while on the job and damaged a nerve in my back. I felt the injury coming as I'd had a few warning signs that morning with pain in my back flaring up during some twisting movements.

Well, sure enough, a few hours later, I'm on the floor under a shelf and in so much agony that I was paralyzed with pain.

The store staff called 911 and they pulled me out from under the shelf, I couldn't move on my own.

For the last 5 years I've been suffering with this pain, I was diagnosed with 8 degree scoliosis 10 years ago, so this compounds the issue.

I haven't been for a chiropractic adjustment in about 3 months and I'm really feeling it, my leg is numb and my back is just screaming at me.

When I lie down, the pain flares up so bad that I can't move, I need to sleep it off it's so bad.

I work in landscaping so you can imagine how hard it can be going through my daily work with this pain.

My chiropractor is great, I've been seeing him for about 3-4 years after having a horrible experience with another one. But I feel I'm just throwing my money away going to see him since it's not dealing with the problem at hand, only suppressing the symptoms.

I'm tired, I'm at a loss as to what I should do, and would like some help. I'm not suicidal, but I have days where I have a hard time getting through it.

I live in Canada where health care is free, but only to a certain point. With the crumbling economy I can't afford to take time off of work, but I need options so I'm not forced to file for a disability claim.

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

My personal experience and those of many others I know, is that chiropractors keep having you come back over and over again, yet the underlying problem is never corrected. It isn't corrected because it isn't something that they can correct.

You sound like you need to be evaluated by a spine specialist to determine exactly what is going on with your spine.

You have been suffering far too long without proper diagnosis and proper treatment.

It sounds like you have nerve compression and it is getting worse.

You need to see either an orthopedic surgeon that specializes in spines or a neurosurgeon that specializes in spines only.

Landscaping is not the best choice of a line of work with a bad back.

Good luck

Hi.....sorry to hear about your pain. I have similar awful pain for 3 years and also live in Canada. Yes our health care is free but the problem is the WAITING times. It taked s about a year just get an MRI, and another year to get an appointment with a pain clinic, and then 6 more months for an appointment with a neurosurgeon. My situation is apparently L4-L5 disc protrusion with L-4 nerve root compression. The pain is inasane, mostly at night and in the morning and then gets easier when I'm up and about (but if I make a wrong move like arch my back I get lightning bolts of pain in my left butt cheek and hip). Looks like I'm headed for surgery and I'm very afraid but I don't see what alternatives I have. I am going to try one last attempt at combination therapy (Physio, inversion table, spinal decompression machine and exercises) before I get the surgery. I think you need to get your butt to a pain clinic and a neurosurgeon ASAP. You can't live with the pain you're in. It's not fair to you. I'm in Toronto and I go to the St.Mike's Hospital Pain Clinic. They can do everything there, from nerve blocks, epidurals and eventually surgery as it's all in the same place. Good luck, and if you have any questions, write me.

Cheers,

Paul

You said this was a work injury back in 2003. Is it not covered by workers comp?

It was covered back when it happened. But now there's nothing anyone can do. I was off on compensation for 3 months.

If this ongoing issue is still part of the original worker comp injury then it should be covered...only 3 months, that's terrible.

The thing is that it didn't bother me for a while, then all of a sudden, it's come back with a vengeance.

Compensation will not cover anything anymore as I haven't held a steady job since then.
