Q: Back pain and surgical intervention
asked by: DoctorQuestion on April 14th, 2008
The neuosurgeon suggested the dynesys stabilization system.  I have researched other surgeries as well.  The AxiaLif, and X Stop.  He didn't mention those to me on the one visit, but the neurologist said that he may feel that is not the best way to go, depending on the areas involved.  I am assuming that there are no less invasive surgeries, such as a laser technique, for this surgery.  Is it because the stabilization is the big factor? Are there any disadvantages in me waiting at my age?  I am very athletic, both in areobics and resistance training,  Now however, it is almost impossible to do either one without consequences.  Thank you for any input regarding my condition.

You have tried all non-surgical methods for treating the back pain. Now, when drugs and physical therapy do not help any more the only possibility left is neurosurgical intervention. You will probably need disc removal. The surgical technique often depends upon the spine area where the degenerated disc is placed. There are also various stabilization systems. Stabilization systems serve to keep the operated spinal part steady until the bone graft fills the whole gap between vertebras created after disc removal (bone fusion). If the two vertebras are not stable, bone fusion between them will fail and a false joint will be formed (pseudoarthrosis). The surgical technique “AxiaLif “also includes a posterior stabilization system.

Age is not a risk factor for surgical disk removal and spinal fusion if you are generally a healthy person.
You can consult a neurosurgeon about the details involved in each operative technique and the type of stabilization system used.
