Dear DR,
I have 35 years and suffer from erectile dysfunction for 2 years. I am married for 10 years and have kids. First problem started 6 years from now, like not having hard erections, but it was always sufficient for intercourse. I thought that could be that I lost a pasion, because I am too long with the same person (my wife), and that this is somehow normal, but 2 years ago it happened> com[letly lost my erection during intercourse. And 3 or 4 time again, always first getting erection, and then loosing it after 1 or 2, minute always during intercourse. I have started using Cialis, and started with 10mg doses, and the start it was good, but latter (6 months ago)I had to increase to 20, and last time it did not help me. The same thing with other PDE 5 inhibitors. I have visited urologist, and he performed some tests (I believe Ultra Sound)(injecting Caverject) and got 50% erection from 5mg dose. He said that my vascular system is OK, prostate also. He had no specific conclusion. What I forgot to mention to him that I have chronic back pain, and last week I did MRI of the lumbar spine and dorsomedilal discal hernia L5&Sl was revealed(protrusion not extrusion) I have a some questions>
1. What could be the most usual cause of having problem with maintaining (not achieving) erections and how to deal with it?
2. What could be the reason for failing PDE 5 inhibitors therapy after some time of success?
3. What does your practice shows: how often is lumbar discal hernia (or back pain) reason for ED>
4. Are there any news considering K max gene therapy for ED.
Thanks in advance

I am not a doctor but read your post..If you are on pain meds that could affect you and cause this problem..Pain alone can cause problems..

Time together is not an issue my husband and i have been married 39 years..Normal is finding answers..I would think that you might need to see a 2nd uroloigst for another opinion or see the smae person and tell them you need help and tell them about your back..Write everything down and take it with you..Leaving out the back issue is relevant..

Could you all need to add more romance to your lives..You could bring roses, make dinner, give a rub.etc..Please don't tell me you can;t because of the back as I have upper and lower discs herniated and other issues--it can be done IF you want it bad enough..good luck..kd

E.D. and back injuries
I have had similar issues after an industrial accident and 4 car accidents (stopped at red lights) but problem with both of my urinologists ... they don't believe whiplash may cause ED. The last MVA I was off work for 3 months. I have totally lost faith in our medical system...or maybe its because of my age of 66 years and older people are just not worth the expense nor time to even consider the issues ... J

I have got similar problems that all of you. I had a lower back injury around 5 years ago when I was doing gardening. It was really painful but I did not go to the doctor. In conjunction with the accident I realized that my penis does not work the way it used to. I found hard to get an erection and even if I could the head of my penis remained still soft. Visited several urologist and even sexual advisers however the problem still exists.
Please if anyone managed to find a cure let me know.

My husband had temporary ED.. It almost seemed it happened overnight, then progressively got worse. Day in and day out, I thought whether or not I should take him to a Urologist. I decided not too.. I researched some meds he was taking and found out that one of them had the side affect of "impotency". Who would've thought Claritin (Claritin (Loratadine) would cause ED??? He suddenly lost his erection and lost interest all together.. Not to mention, one time he did have an orgasm, but no ejaculation! Watch out for the allergy and sinus medications that contain Loratadine. to my amazement, it seems pretty common, even though it's listed as "uncommon side affects"!

From my own personal experience with lower back pain and ED problems I can say for fact it was my appendix that was failing and because of it's location in the body, it interfere's with anything else in it's proximity like the penis, colon, lower back etc. Now, I've had the appendix out now for about 7 months but I'm still getting lower back pain when my penis is soft or when I need to poop, when my penis is erect and I'm on an empty stomach though the back pain stops completely. I hope this info helps.

I'm 23 and have the same issues. My story is, I was rear-ended in a car accident that messed up my back pretty good. I was seeing a chiropractor starting at 3-4 times a week to 1-2 times a week. I went to him for 1.5 years. During this time, I lead a very healthy sexual life. After I stopped going, it was not very long after I noticed my back became more uncomfortable and my erections were disappearing like the rest of you guys. Now, my back is always tense (mostly lower right side). I can still get erections masturbating but they're not hard like before. I don't think the timing was a coincidence. It's been 1.5 years since I've seen a chiropractor and I'm going back tomorrow. I will give a status report soon. A side note, I have type 1 diabetes but no other complications - I'm healthy as a horse. I too thought i was just getting bored with sex because it's nothing new to me but I don't think so.

Finally that cleared a month half later. Then all of a sudden I started having either erection problems where things just werent as hard as before and then I would cum quick and it was sore almost didnt feel good.So now reading on here Im starting to think its all from my low back injury....Life sucks now...

i been on testosterone for about 3 1/2 years, didnt seem to change my erection quality too much, it was poor, but i had back / hip pain since nov. 2010, i had back surgery march 2012, l5-s1 microdiscectomy, after the surgery i seemed to get better erections, my wife even said "what happened?". now im on 5mg cialis daily, testosterone shots and i cant get enough sex. dont know if its cause of back surgery or not, but i think i always had low test levels, cause i never had a sex drive like i do now, maybe cause i take with cialis with it? i dont know but it makes me feel good about myself, cause i never felt good about myself

impotence
It is true. I also had a whiplash injuy and when my neck started to hurt I would lose my erection. I didn't think that a neck injury could cause impotence but it has. My neck is sore most of the time now and I just don't feel inclined or aroused any more. I have always had a lower back problem but it never seemed to cause a problem. I am 66 years old and I would like my sex drive back. so would my wife. I am just starting a back exercise program to stretch and strengthen my spine. I will let you know if it helps.

Hi All. I have the same problem most people on this thread have. About a year ago now, I started to experience much weaker erections. I'm 28 years old, and otherwise in good health. Up to a year ago, having an erection meant a very rigid penis, an an even harder penis head.

It took me a long time to find out that the dysfunction was due to a lower back injury. After much investigation, I have diagnosed myself with a pinched/ trapped Pudendal nerve. The Pudendal nerve is the main nerve responsible for both sexual arousal and sexual motor function. It is documented that cases of lower back injury can lead to a trapped Pudendal nerve.

According to the information i came across, when you injure your back (muscle, ligaments, etc) your body first creates a web of scar tissue that acts as a scaffold inside your body. Your muscles can then be rebuilt using the scar tissue as scaffolding. However, once repaired, the scar tissue often remains there.

What then happens is your muscle and the scar tissue both compete for space in your body, resulting in nerves being entrapped or pinched.

Having an entrapped Pudendal nerve is a very distressing feeling; you know something is very wrong with your sexual organ but you have no idea what it is. A couple of my symptoms are:
Lost of feeling in the penis
Strange sensation when urinating (as though not fully in control)
Altered sensation when ejaculating
Weak erections
Erections that are lost quickly
Soft penis head
etc

For a long time I thought I had a veineous leak as the symptoms all point to it, except for the urinating part.

Once I found what was wrong, I was able to find a solution. I have started doing Bikram Yoga (hot yoga). Bikram yoga is amazing has been doing wonders for my condition.

Sadly, i am not able to go as often as i wish i could at the moment. But to give you an idea, after doing it for 10 days in a row non-stop, my erections for before the accident were back at 90%. My penis head was hard as, it was throbbing, I had the full spectrum of lust a is supposed to feel. It was great.

Since then i have been very busy with work so I haven't been able to go more than twice a week. I have been making slow progress and i am probably at 60% at the moment.

Erectile Dysfunction
Hi Yogi86,

I am having the same problem as u. Currently 27 years old... So u do only Bikram Yoga instead of treating ur back pain issue?

Hi,

Factors like smoking, drinking, diabetes and blood pressure also lead to erectile dysfunction.Proper evaluation of these factors is important for accurate diagnosis and treatment.

2)It is seen these PDE 5 inhibitors work best with specific categories of people such as those who are moderately diabetic and have stable cardio health.

Check with a physician first
