Q: Back pain after microdiscectomy

I had a microdocectomy of L5-S1 2 years ago for severe sciatica. About 6 weeks after my surgery, I noticed I was starting to have significant lower back pain, especially when I would lie down or when I first got up in the morning. I also have frequent charlie horses, both legs, potassium level is normal. I never had actual "back" pain prior to my surgery..it was all nerve pain down the right leg. Has anyone else experienced anything similar to this?

Sounds like you need to see a spine surgeon again and be evaluated for what is going on with your spine.

An MRI would be a good idea as well.

Good luck

Yes! I am experiencing similar back pain, and it's been 8 weeks since my microdiscectomy (also for sciatica, and i only had leg pain previously also).

Have you found any solutions?

Have you had any physical therapy since your microdisectomy?

It could be that your muscles are weak from surgery and non use or incorrect use from the sciatica.

It doesn't take much to weaken core muscles and even though you think you are using them, when you had the sciatica, you where not moving, walking correctly and the muscles where not being used correctly.

Since your surgery and the sciatica pain is gone, you are moving again and the muscles are weak.

Speak to your doctor about a round of physical therapy to learn how to strengthen your core muscles, keep the strong and used properly, How to properly use the muscles so that you don't have any further spine problems.
