Back and hip pain origin
Posted: 04-16-08 07:25am

I have been suffering with lower back pain on and off for a few years. Over the past few weeks it has got considerably worse and now the pain is in my left hip. It is so painful that I cannot actually lay on my left side for very long.

It doesn't ease off if I rest and if I cannot walk for long distances. The only exercise I can seem to do is swimming.

I have 2 young children one of which is not walking yet so do have to lift him a lot. I have got a hip seat which helps but I think I got this a little too late. I have also tried a TENS machine which helps temporarily as pain killers do not seem to do much.

I have an xray booked for Friday but I am concerned there is some underlying problem which has been ignored for all this time.

If anyone has any suggestions or advice I would be very grateful.

Hello Weensta,

Welcome to this forum and to the great people who post and try to help others.

Sorry to read about the severe back pain that you are having.

I'm glad that you will be having an x-ray on Friday.

Weensta, may I suggest that you seek out the best neurologist/spinal surgeon in your area. Then make an appontment with the spinal doctor at the top of your list. Next, make an appointment with the doctor next on you list. It is always a good idea to get a second opinion.

I wish you the best. Stay in touch.

Hey!

Are you doing any back/core-strengthening exercises?

I was in a lot of pain this winter/autumn & finally then got Xrays, & basically, there is 'some damage' but the best thing to do is exercises to strengthen the core muscles...
Glad you'll get/got Xrays too & see what's really happening - for me it was a relief too that nothing was broken or such, but there were some minor things wrong & I have to be careful & make sure to do exercise & not sit so much in one piece, & lift more carefully etc. to maintain or improve my spine health...

Well I have had xray and it showed a little wear and tear so I am now waiting for an appointment for an MRI scan. The severity of the pain changes from week to week and this week it is very bad. I cannot lay on my right hand side at all and have been really snappy with my children as I am in so much pain. I think I may have to contact my doctor again.

Hedllo Weensta,

EXCELLENT that you will be having MRIs taken. A very good "next step". Try to have the appointment as soon as possible. Yep, push your doctor for an early appointment. AND then an appointment to see your doctor and get his/her opinion of the next step to take.

About the variability of back pain. Weensta, I think all of us spineys have what I call "bad weather" days. Only think is I can't pin it exactly to "bad weather.

Take care. I wish you the best.

Yeah, 'bad weather' still seems to have some influence, but since I have figured out the posture mistake & bad exercises I had been making, & also seen a specialist who told me a few things so now I have a softer bed & am sitting on an inflatable ball it has MUUCH LESS influence! /grin/

Also, what I eat has some influence... (salted dry pork in the evening doesn't seem to do well, also it is best to go for healthy food & stay away from sweets & additives, white flour etc.) Maybe you could start a food/mood/pain diary & observe yourself?
