Q: Back alignment

Where do I begin? Well I was born in a weird sort of way. I was in a bad position at first but I positioned myself correctly at the very last moment of my birth. I have always kind of walked funny. I was made fun of a bit as a child about it. My shoulders would be further back than they were supposed to be when they were relaxed. Well now I am 24 and I am thinking that my body is probably done growing around this time and for the last I don't know how many months I have been having problems with my back being out of alignment. It feels noticeably uncomfortable and I can move my shoulders in such a way where I move them forward and my spine moves and it doesn't feel as uncomfortable anymore.

But could it be from my birth really? Because I used to sleep on a spring mattress and one time the spring caught me under my shoulder blade and pulled on it a little.

Obviously this isn't normal and with the bills piling up I don't really know how seriously I should take this problem. What do you think? Question

I have been trying Yoga very recently but that doesn't seem to solve my problem completely, but to be fair I haven't given it enough time to pass judgment. It's just bad timing with my wisdom teeth coming in.

It could be a number of factors that combine to cause your pain. The thing you mentioned about your birth would need to be seen by a professional, but the mattress could be a suspect for sure.

Did this pain start recently or have you always had it?
How is your posture during the day?
How is your posture when you sleep?

There are certain Yoga positions that helped me to find more comfortable ways of sleeping, or at least made me more conscious of the times when i was sleeping in a bad posture. There is one posture where you lay flat on the floor and place one of those Yoga bricks underneath your spine, and also another where you lay flat on the floor with your head to the side and hands down. These two really helped me to find more comfortable positions during sleep - which in turn has definitely reduced my back pain.

Also I've noticed that increasing my overall energy level seems to help my body to re-align itself naturally. This includes diet, sleep, exercise, taking breaks during work, breathing exercises, etc.

It's a good thing that you are willing to try different options. Unfortunately, the Yoga itself probably won't be a magic solution to the pain. For me it's a constant battle. I have to really be fully aware of my body posture throughout the day in order to catch myself before sliding into ones that cause me pain later on.

Do you find that maintaining the posture that makes you more comfortable helps to ease your pain or is it unmanageable to keep up throughout the day?

No I don't think I've ever had this problem before. I'm at my desk too often sometimes so I do try to get up every hour to walk around and stretch a little bit.

When I am sleeping I found that sleeping on my back was best and that sleeping on my side or stomach was uncomfortable but recently that changed. Sleeping on my back does seem to be more comfortable but lately my spine seems to change alignment because I think my memoryfoam mattress is too soft and doesn't support my back enough even though it is quote the "firmest" memoryfoam option.

I will continue learning more Yoga and I regret not learning it sooner. I will say this though, when I do backbends for yoga, my body feels a lot more stretched out and relaxed than it ever did for wrestling or sports in high school. I learned a lot about exercise by wrestling but not nearly enough as I did these past few days when learning Yoga. It's a lot harder than it looks too.

So to answer your question I do find that my posture does help to make it less uncomfortable and easier for my back to stay in alignment.

What worries me though is that when I do feel uncomfortable it feels like the weight of my body is not good and pushes down on everything else. My stomach makes noises and I start passing gas and will have a bowel movement unless I position it so I feel comfortable again. That hasn't happened since I've started Yoga and I've been doing it every day for a half hour this week but it still goes in and out of alignment.

Also lately, when I feel like my spine is in the right position, it feels itchy around my spine on my skin. Is that indicative of anything having to do with my nerves? The videos I have watched are all about lengthening the spine and comforting the nerves around the spine so I was wondering if that means it is working or not?

It's normal for your stomach to make noises and pass gas. That's what it's there to do - to digest and eliminate waste. Sometimes it just comes at awkward times, but to repress our body's normal function can actually be quite dangerous. A good example - repressing the urge to go to the bathroom can cause hemmerhoids. If it happens at work or at a meeting, its ok to just excuse yourself and run to the bathroom real quick. We're all human. Smile

I've also noticed that when I exercise and eat properly, my stool becomes much more regular and i pass alot more gas than usual.

The tingling around your spine is a good thing. As you release blocks of energy, you will notice this tingling throughout your body. After practices such as QiGong or Tai Chi it's not only normal but a very good thing to notice tingling & vibration around your joints, on your skin, etc. This is blocked energy coming to the surface.

Be careful with your back tho. Be very gentle and take it slowly. Send your breath into the area that you are working on.

Thanks so much. I was kinda worried because at first there was this one time where I had these back problems and suddenly I was stuck on the toilet and had 3 bowel movements in a row, each getting progressively more acidic and painful. But if somehow that was being repressed from coming out then that makes me feel better about it. I will continue doing Yoga daily and I will look into buying a better chair for my desk.

Thanks again.
