Q: baby not responding to name

Hello, my baby is just barely 8 months old and hardly responds to his own name. I have to say it over and over and over and even then he doesn't always respond. Sometimes he does though. Everything else seems normal he crawls, pulls himself up on things, says mama and dada (he has no idea what it means though), makes eye contact, smiles, laughs etc. Anyway, it it normal for a baby his age to not respond to his name? What kind of language skills should he have at 8 months?

Remember that your baby is an individual, first and foremost. At 8 months old your baby should be doing all the things that you have said he is doing. Some babies respond to their own names, some, it takes a bit longer. Just keep using his name. He will eventually make the connection. My son started responding to his name at about 10 months of age and my daughter at 12. If you are really concerned, bring it up at his next well-baby checkup.

It sounds like your baby is perfectly normal. SHe is babbling and interacting with you. If he sometimes does respond to his name, this means that he is transitioning to being able to recognize the sound of his own name. At other times, he might just be very preoccupied with something else. There is so much in their little worlds to see. It could be also that she is very used to you being around, so try to have someone else do it for you such as another sibling or your husband and see what happens.

My baby is 11 months old, and she doesn't respond until I make my voice very deep or do funny things. She will turn and look at me, or she plays a game and refuses to turn around and grins because she knows I want her to turn around. She always responds to her sisters...
