Q: Baby abnormalities after cytotec ?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on March 24th, 2009
i am 5 months pregant now. During the 2nd month of my pregnancy, i tried to abort the baby using cytotec.. took 2 pills and inserted 1. After a few hours, I bled, but the next morningthe bleeding stopped and never continued. I was not really surprised then to find out that the baby was still there.
Should i expect abnormalities to my baby?

Congenital anomalies sometimes associated with fetal death have been reported subsequent to the unsuccessful use of misoprostol (brand name: cytotec) as an abortifacient, but the drug's teratogenic mechanism has not been demonstrated. Several reports in the literature associate the use of misoprostol during the first trimester of pregnancy with skull defects, cranial nerve palsies, facial malformations, and limb defects.

Most of the previously mentioned fetal abnormalities might easily be detected with fetal ultrasound. So if you had one and the results were good, then there is a possibility that the misoprstol did not affect the baby at all.
