I am currently breastfeeding and i was prescribed Azurette on the package it says do not use while breastfeeding. I had asked the pharmacist what birth control was good to take and he said NONE very sternly. I had asked the doctor to give me something that was ok to take while breastfeeding. So when the pharmacist told me this i was i was very concerned especially the way he said it. Can you please advise me if there is a b.c. that is safe or if the one i was currently prescribed is ok. My daughter has just turned 4 months. Thank you

Belinda

I can understand why there is a difference in opinions on the subject. In hormonal birth control pills, the hormones DO pass from the mother to the child. However, there have been no ill effects seen in the babies who receive these hormones. In progesteron- only pills/ minipills some women see an increase in breast milk production. In combination/ progesterone and estrogen pills, the danger is that the breast milk supply will decrease.
Ten years down the road medical science may say it causes brain cancer or something dangerous like that but as of now, there has been no evidence that suggests that this causes problems in infants. Only you can decide whether or not to take the risk.
