Q: Asymmetrical skin fold in inguinal area - hernia ?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on October 8th, 2009
I noticed that my 5-month-old baby has asymmetrical skin fold in the inguinal area. It has a protruding bump towards the perinium. It does not enter the scrotum, nor it goes away when in horizontal position. The skin fold looks like a baby fat roll to me. Could it be hernia? Is it true that inguinal hernia always descends in the scrotum?

Hi
Welcome to the forum!
An asymmetrical skin fold in the inguinal area in a 5 month old baby can be due to baby fat as you said. It could also be an inguinal hernia. This hernia can appear to be continuous with the scrotum or it could be a separate mass. The size depends on the opening and the contents of the hernia sac.
Another possibility in a baby is undescended testis. If the testis does not descend into the scrotum by one year then it should be treated.
However on net and without examining it is difficult to give a confirmed opinion. Please consult his pediatrician once. Hope this helps. Take care!
