Hello all,

Does anyone have daily asthma, but no wheezing or coughing? My only symptoms seems to be chest tightness/discomfort, shortness of breath. It scares me more because i think it's more than just asthma.

I never cough and I might wheeze audibly once in a great while in the middle of the night. I have one or two asthma attacks in the past year that involved wheezing, but they were relieved after about 10 minutes with my rescue inhaler. The problem is I have to use my inhaler everyday - about 4 -6 times a day this time of year. Just because I am so short of breath and have tightness in my chest.

My symptoms seem more scary as I always wonder if this could be cardio related. So far all test are a okay on the cardio end, but you just never know. I am only 32 and i was diagnosed with asthma about a year ago. It has sucked everyday because on top of that I have pretty moderate panic disorder and anxiety, so I cannot tell what hurts if it really even hurts.

Anyone else have asthma like this. I am starting to wonder if there is not something else going on.

P.S. I did smoke for about 12 years, but i have quit that a year ago too - then found out I had asthma that same week. Thought I was just having breathing problems because I quit, but I guess smoking was masking the real problem.

Thanks for any advice...

Hi!
Not every person with asthma has the same symptoms in the same way.
You may not have all of the common asthma symptoms, or you may have different symptoms at different times.
As a asthma sufferer you can have occasional mild bouts of breathlessness or daily wheezing that persists despite taking large doses of medication.
There can be an asthma without wheezing and not so intense coughing.

Did you have an annual doctor's visit for the lung function tests?

I hear stories of people over coming asthma. Is this true? Has any here really just beat it?

I would love to hear your stories.

You are welcome!

Although, there is no total cure for asthma, clinical evidences have shown that many years of regular treatment with anti-inflammatory asthma medication seems to make the disease disappear in young people who have not had asthma for a long time.

You should take your preventive asthma treatment regularly.

Asthma itself is usually more severe when you get it at an older age.

Outgrowing asthma is characteristic for mild asthma in children.

ASTHMA
FINALLY!! someone understands me!!! i just went to the ER on thursday night and i was panicking cudnt breathe, talk, had pain on my collar bone and ribs, they said nope not asthma coz ur not wheezing (i ALWAYS get that answer) and so they took x-rays, and nothing but i was on the nebulizer and taking my inhaler every 3 hours. than i came to my doctor with shortness of breath tht persisted 2 days later. she put me on steroids for 5 days because where i live this week's weather has been really hot hazy and humid so she said it shud help. right now i have not been working or been out of my home since sunday and it sucks. i wake up fine but as i go through the day it worsens and than i just give up and go to sleep (fighting with discomfort) after the 5 days are over, i will go on inhl. steroids 2 puffs twice a day and for a month or until it gets cold again. i cant wait until i can just sit outside again and im really worried becoz the hospital and my doctor look at me like im stupid coz i have no wheezin but what can i do? i dont feel well at all and a machine showing i have 100% oxg. level and that im "safe" is not helping me. i wanna cry, i cant wait for this to be over. (i also take singular) i keep having to take big breaths every 5 normal breaths and i just want it to go away,,,,

i am 17 years old, been diagnosed with asthma since i was 13. i just wish i could exercise and act and be like other normal people.

I hear ya. My son has asthma and some doctors can become very in-sensitive about the situation. Not all doctors are as knowledgeable as they would like to think about asthma. It doesn't always have to have wheezing to be a problem. I learned alot from a mother who has asthma herself as well as her youngest daughter. She taught me more about how to help my son and what to recognize when I need to assist on medical treatment. My son has visited the ICU once for three days when his turned fatal, however the specialist doctors had to step in becuase the asthma therapist didn't believe there was a problem. Hello, my son was screaming he couldn't breathe and the therapist had already given him what at least 20 treatments before the specialist insisted he go to the ICU. You have to really go on your judgement. You know your body better than anyone. Learn all about yourself so you can recognize when you need to ask for more test or other options. I don't have anything against Doctor's but I do wish that more would be sensitive about the patients needs and not brush it off just to get to the next patient.

I was diagnosed with asthma 2 months ago, I was told my airways were 50% blocked. I had NO wheezing and no other symptoms of asthma other than short of breath. I was put on Flovent and Xopenex, neither have given me any relief. After about 4 weeks on the Flovent I had a follow up visit and the tests showed my airways were no long blocked. Weird since I still cannot breath well. I found through research that I could have Vocal Cord Dysfunction that you can have with or without asthma. Also difficulty breathing can mean Hyperventilation Syndrome. Both of the latter can be cured by simple breathing exercises, you can go to a speech therapist to learn. Some doctors fail to tell their patients that asthma is NEVER a condition of it's own, it ALWAYS has an underlying medical condition and if that underlying condition is not addressed your asthma will probably not get better. The underlying condition can be: allergies, stress, GERD, VCD, etc. Asthma generally is not cured, but can be reduced significantly. My sister-in-law has had asthma for 30 years, she used to use A LOT of meds, but now is no longer on long term meds and rarely has to us albuterol. Another thing doctors don't mention is that stress plays a HUGE part in asthma, it WILL make it worse and sometimes is the only underlying condition. Learning to deal with stress/anxiety can help significantly with asthma, VCD and hyperventilation syndrome as well as most medical conditions. YOGA does wonders for all of these things too. Asthmatics should avoid certain foods, like those high in sulfates. I have done a lot of research and went over all the above information with my lung specialist and my internist and both confirm these statements. I wish all of you the best!
