Hi everyone,

Please help me as I'm experiencing shortness of breath right now!!!

I was diagnosed with panic disorder (along with other anxiety disorders) years ago, but haven't had severe attacks in a long time. The past few weeks however, I have been under stress and had the attacks come back. Last night, my attack had a lot of respiratory symptoms. For the past several days I had a feeling of something in my chest occasionally, often at night, and so I'd try to cough to get it out - sometimes producing mucus, but not alleviating the feeling. Last night I had my usual lump in my throat, but also a sensation that I couldn't breathe a satisfying breath. This lasted for hours, freaking me out and getting worse then better the worse. It started to pass (not fully) after I vomited. The thing is, I was able to close my eyes, and do my breathing exercises throughout this - taking full breaths in and out, seemingly struggling only with my urge to hyperventilate and the frustrated feeling of not having a satisfying breath (wanting to suck more air in to get the satisfying feeling). Could this have been asthma, or is asthma more like you can't do a full breathing count during breathing exercises? I was not wheezing and today I have a bit of a congested nose and an occasional productive cough (I tend to have that often when I wake up – early evening today). I have a message in to my GP, but I was hoping to get answers sooner - especially like when to go to the ER. Thank you so much in advance for your help.

Welcome to EHEALTH forum!
This can be an attack of panic, but, psychologic factors can be also recognized to influence the onset and course of asthma.
Asthma increases the risk of panic.
Personally, I think you are suffering only from panic disorder (shortness of breath due to asthma usually has specific triggers for every person, and, shortness due to panic attacks comes suddenly, unexpected without obvious reason for that).
Increased mucus in airways is a sign of asthma leading to productive cough, but, feeling congested and wanting to cough up something in morning can be due to post nasal drip (having sinusitis), too.

Have you ever been performed a lung function (breathing) test or other tests?
Are you under treatment for panic disorder?

Hi!

I went to the doctor and he said my lungs sound great. I insisted on a peak flow test anyway, and he said that I was within normal range. I was also sent for a Chest XRay to ease my mind, and that came back negative for anything bad - so he says I do NOT have asthma. I'm still panicking and still having trouble breathing though. Thank you for your reply!

I am not currently being treated for anxiety disorders, but I'm starting biofeedback for it on Monday.

Hey I had this too, for a few days though.. I also tried to cough it out, but it didn't work TToTT

It was like something was pushing against the breating part, making it harder to breathe...
Then I ate fish.. and it started to hurt while swallowing after I ate dinner, so I tried singing it out (desperately trying every method LOL)
So I tried that, but it felt like it didn't work, also I couldn't sing good, I was off many times because of this, but I just screamed and shouted it all out.
The next day I woke up and it was gone!

Don't know if my problem was a panick thing like yours though..
I'm not a docter either, but maybe you could try screaming it out xD

No.. sounds crazy, don't listen to me o.o'

Hello. I am A teenager, and I have been suffering from panic attacks constantly everynight! .. I usualy feel like I cant breathe. I have asthma but I have never had an attack and I have rarley wheezed. I am feeling very nervouse thought because i do not want to experience an asthma attack.. so everytime I being to feel a difference in my breathing I panic. I also get a feeling that my throat is closing up sometimes. This really seems to be taking over my life.. I cant even focus sometimes in classes. It is worst when I have a cold. Like I do right now. This also makes it really hard for me to sleep.
