Q: asking for different medication

I'm 22 and I've had 3 back surgeries since I was 18. I had three herniated discs one of which pinched a nerve. For most of that that, the medication I was on was a combination of tramadol and low dose vicodin. After my last surgery my insurance dried up. Since late last year I've had to goto a county hospital for PM dr. appointments. When I went there I hadn't been on meds for a while so it wasn't really known to them what I had been on before. Since then I've been taking tramadol with codeine w/ tylenol. I've been on the codeine since around October. Codeine was never as successful at pain relief as vicodin in the beginning, but over the last couple months it has become less and less effective. I assume this is because my body is becoming tolerant.

Anyways I've been wanting to talk to my doctor about switching to vicodin, but I've been hesitant to do so because I know some doctors get about prescribing it . Anyone know any good ways to bring this subject up? Other than just blurting it out. My other concern is he will say no but then also take me off the codeine and put me on something I've never been on before, which may or may not work, as I can't keep paying for different meds if they don't work.

I can relate to your problem. I'm also 22 and have been on pain meds (bulging cervical discs and postural crap) for a year and a half. My doctor is actually fairly liberal about giving me pain meds, even though docs will rarely put people our age on opiates.

I guess my question for you, is why will you ONLY consider Vicodin? That will likely be what raises the red flag. Obviously you're not some hopeless addict if you've had 3 surgeries, but doctors have to be extremely careful and discerning about writing painkiller prescriptions. Unfortunately, even if you like Vicodin for pain now, eventually it'll wear off... like they all do. Sad

I'd say the best way to go about it is to go to your doctor and simply say "I'm in pain, it's affecting my life detrimentally, what we are currently doing (as to opposed to "What I'm currently TAKING") is not effective enough to allow me to live my life, what can we do to change that?" Then allow him to talk... he will probably name a few things (patches, OTC, etc.) After LISTENING to the options, explain why or why not you think they would be effective. If you go in with the mindset that your doctor is there to help you, not to prevent you from feeling better, you will be better off.

Good luck... and that really sucks about your back. You can read my story in this forum if you want as well.
