Q: ASCUS information and related biopsy
asked by: DoctorQuestion on April 27th, 2009
A year ago I went to the doctor for my yearly pap and my results came back high risk hpv ascus. So I got a second opinion where she told me to just wait and be healthy and it will go away on its own. I wasnt as healthy as I should be and the results came back the same a year later. So now I had my second ascus pap with high risk hpv. She once again told me to just wait it out and to be healthy and exercise and eat right and come back in a year then if it was still abnormal we will do a colp and biopsy. I have completely changed my life. I now work out at least 4 days a week and no longer eat fast food at all and plenty of fruits and veggies. She said sometimes it can take up to two years to clear this up and not to worry.
Does this sound right to you? Do you think it will clear up and if it indeed was cancer wouldnt my results have had a higher cell change?

ASCUS stands for Atypical Squamous Cells of Undetermined Significance. It means that changed cells were found in the vaginal mucosa. The presence of high risk HPV increases the chances for any precancerous condition (CIN) to occur. However, if this was the case, the cells would have been more changed and it would have been noted.

A biopsy is done with a needle and it hurts as much as every other needle. When a biopsy is performed the doctor might ask the patient if he/she wants anesthesia to be used. Please reconsider if you are allergic to any food, environmental factors, or medicine before you give your agreement for anesthesia.
