Arthritis can attack joints in almost any part of the body. Some forms of arthritis cause changes you can see and feel such as swelling, warmth, and redness in your joints. Other types of arthritis cause less troublesome symptoms, but still slowly damage your joints.  You might have some form of arthritis if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • Joint stiffness (especially in the morning)
  • Joint swelling
  • Lasting joint pain
  • Problems using or moving a joint normally
  • Tenderness or pain when touching a joint
  • Trouble moving around
  • Warmth and redness in a joint.

Most types of arthritis cause pain in your joints.  The most common signs and symptoms of arthritis are pain, swelling, and stiffness.  If any one of these symptoms lasts longer than 2 weeks, see your doctor or ask for a referral to a rheumatologist.  You will want to confirm a diagnosis and start a treatment plan.

Some kinds of arthritis can additionally affect other parts of your body. So, along with pain in your joints, you may experience some of the following symptoms. These symptoms may be signs of other illnesses :

  • Fever
  • Skin rash or itchy skin
  • Trouble breathing
  • Weight loss

If you have a fever, feel physically ill, suddenly have a swollen joint, or have problems using your joint, see your doctor sooner.  Learn more about diagnosing arthritis in the how to diagnose arthritis section now.
