Your question was pretty general so I'm not sure what you're asking. Are you asking if men and women are viewed as equals in society? If so, then I think that most people see them as equals. If you mean are men and women equal in the workforce I would say no! While things are improving, we still have far to go before men and women get equal pay for equal work. Here's a prime example: two years ago my boss told me that if he had his way no woman would work a particular job that paid about $14 an hour at the time. He said that women had financial support from their boyfriends and husbands and did not need the money as much. He felt the same way about overime. If it was mandatory, he expected every woman to be at work, but if it was voluntary overtime, he absolutely refused to allow women to make extra money, especially if it was near Christmas when most people needed more money.
Admittedly, the above is a drastic example. I know that there are often other factors that keep women from advancing as much or as quickly as men.
- When living with a husband or boyfriend, women are more likely to be working part time or less hours than men.
- If a couple has kids, the woman is much more likely to be a stay at home parent or take an extended maternity leave, take time off from work to stay home with a sick child, miss work for school related meetings or activities...
Those kinds of things may cause a woman with the same years of experience to actually have less hourly experience and be a lesser candidate for a promotion.
