Apri is the generic of Yaz
It is supposed to treat acne and painful menstrual periods as well as preventing conception.

There are a number of side effects with Apri that you should report to your healthcare provider. These include, but are not limited to:

•Depression or other emotional changes
•Migraines (or changes in your migraines, if you have had them before)
•Breast lumps
•Signs of a blood clot in the leg, such as pain in the calf, leg cramps, and leg or foot swelling
•Signs of a blood clot in the lung, such as shortness of breath, sharp chest pain, or coughing up blood
•Chest pain or heaviness, which may be a sign of a heart attack
•Sudden loss of vision or vision changes, which can be a sign of a blood clot in the eye
•Signs of a stroke, such as vision or speech changes, weakness or numbness in an arm or leg, and a severe headache
•Signs of liver damage, such as yellowing of the whites of the eyes or skin (jaundice), dark urine, and upper right abdominal pain (stomach pain)
•Heavy vaginal bleeding between periods (light bleeding or spotting is normal)
•High blood pressure (hypertension)
•High cholesterol
•Signs of an allergic reaction, including an unexplained rash, hives, itching, unexplained swelling, wheezing, or difficulty breathing or swallowing.

The regular side effects are:
•Breakthrough bleeding and spotting between periods (especially for the first few cycles)
•Nausea and vomiting
•Changes in your eyes that make it more difficult to wear contact lenses
•Bloating
•Breast tenderness and enlargement
•Headaches (although birth control pills can improve headaches in some women)

I was on Apri for awhile and when I get back on I'll be taking the same pill-- I don't think its the generic Yaz though. Although they are similar to a point, Yaz is a different pill entirely

The side effects are the same for all brith control pills. Basically, if one side effect doesn't go away within the first three months or is just too annoying for you to deal with for that amount of time then speak with your provider about switching pills.

It's wonderfully cheap! I didn't have insurance and I was paying the same as some of my friends who did. Very Happy

Maddie34 is right.
My mistake. The ingredient in Apri is desogestrel/ ethinyl estradiol, which is the generic of Desogen. I thought Desogen was the drug in Yaz but it's not. The drug in Yaz is drospirenone. Apparently Desogn is the name brand, not the drug.
So Apri is one of the generics of Desogen.

I just started taking Apri and I have had really bad constipation whenever I find myself with gas pains and in the restroom. That's actually what I looked up and found myself in this forum.

No, but my boobs did get bigger.

I was in season for my sport so I watched what I ate closely and so I didn't gain weight. Hormonal birth control can affect your apetite and people tend to eat more if they aren't paying attention. That's normally why people gain weight on the pill.

Boob swelling could be a sign of hormone inbalance (too much estrogen with respect to progesterone). i noticed apri/desogen (which i was on for many years) has a lower amount of the progesterone-like compound than some other brands like ortho tricyclen. I'm no doctor though, probably should consult with one. Smile

first period after stopping birthcontrol
yeah this happens often, your body is just readjusting the hormones. dont worry you'll start your period soon! but expect it to be rather heavy Sad just speaking from experience, every one is a little different.

apri headaches
Hi.
I'm on my second week of pills for Apri, i just started it after being off the pill for years. i used to be on ortho-tricyclen lo. Anyway, i've been getting dull, achey headaches behind my eyes and around my sinuses for at least a week now, and I'm not sure if the pill is to blame. today i've had a headache almost all day. has anyone else experienced headaches with apri? i kind of want to just wait and see if the headaches go away, (maybe my body is adjusting to the pill?) but man, it really sucks.

Yes to Apri
My skin cleared up beautifully on Apri. I have been experiencing the pain behind my eyes and on one side of my forehead... Never had it before this though. They are subsiding. But I've now been on it about three months and I like it overall more than Mircette, kariva, ortho-tri-cyclen, ortho cyclen, all the others i've been on basically!

Apri warning
I don't want to scare anyone but I was on Apri for 4 months and ended up in critical condition for 10 days. I developed MULTIPLE blood clots in my lungs and they were afraid that they would move. The pulmonary doctor said that he had never seen that many pulminary emboli before. After this I did more research and found that the case study showed that 20 out of a 100 actually got blood clots. I strongly recommend that you do your homework and discuss this BC pill with your doctor before you take it. Good luck everyone. I am lucky enough to be here to respond to you about it.

Regularity
I'm on my third month of being on APRI and I have found that I am not very...regular. In terms of bowel movements.
Is anyone else having these problems? I'm incredibly bloated. I workout all the time and watch what I eat

I was on marvelon but my insurance only covers generic now. I started 3 weeks ago. I have had a heck of a time. I am so sleepy and tired. and irritable. I have had trouble concentrating in school (im in univ) and now i have sharp pains in my chest.
I am stopping now because i am worried i might be getting blood clots or something. I plan on visiting the doctor shortly. This has been a miserable month! Ps. I was on marvelon for over 5 years up until 3 weeks ago with no problems.

In response to whatwhatok
I am experiencing the exact same problems. I have been on Marvelon for 7 years and switched to apri due to insurance coverage as well a couple years ago and then went back on Marvelon a couple months later due to side effects. three weeks ago i went back on it because my pharmacy did not have Marvelon in stock and I am back to the same problems I had before. I can assure you that I can't wait until they have Marvelon in stock again.
What you need to do is go back to your doctor and have them re-write your prescription and and also add NO SUBSTITUTIONS this should bypass the insurance mess without you having to pay extra for anything.

I just started my 2nd month on Apri after being on Seasonique for about 3 yrs. I was really concerned about what effects it may have on my mood, depression, etc...I've been pleasently surprised that I haven't noticed much of a change. However, I feel like I've gained 20lbs!!! My breasts are HUGE and I think this is the heaviest I've ever been. I've noticed that my appetite has increased drastically especially in the middle of the night after I've taken my daily pill. Not quite sure what to do...I've recently started working out and watching my diet so hopefully the weight will come off. If not...I may go back to Seasonique. HORRIBLY expensive but NO side effects at all! LOVED Seasonique!

JRo630 I'm having the same problem! I've been taking Apri for about 3 weeks (was on Yaz for years) and am sooo irregular now! I've gone from maybe once a day to like 3-4 times and super bloated. Today's actually the first day I haven't had those problems, so we'll see.

side effects of Apri
I've been on Apri for a little over a year now. Side effects I've had are: headaches each month (I have asked for prescribed pain medicine for them & it makes them go away--Naproxen). I experience a good bit of cramps, but my periods are WAY shorter than they ever have been! I have experienced slight depression (sad/crying more than happy). I have experienced some chest pains as well, along with gaining weight & increased appetite. I do like this birth control, but I hate the monthly headaches that come along with it! Thank goodness for that Naproxen!
