Q: Apparent symptoms of bipolar disorder
asked by: DoctorQuestion on June 20th, 2009
I am 24 and i have always had this problem of filling really happy and then feeling sad and low . For example i have to have some thing to look forward to,to keep on my mind .When it is over i feel sad and low but try to pick my self up . I can go long periods of feeling fine and happy but than one day wake up feeling low and sad that i want to cry for no reason .Things i don't like or understand can really make me feel low and upset me like work I'm starting a new job Ive been out of work for months and start a new job Monday and instead of feeling positive i feel really sad and low but don't know why . If i don't have some thing to look forward to even just going fishing than i get really bad and just feel like I'm in a black hole . I'M not a very smart person who suffers with spelling and i don't pick up things very easy , my nerves get to me and make me feel sick and i don't want to eat .Its a Saturday and i have a party tonight but i feel sad and low looking outside and just don't

Bipolar Disorder Answer A6846

According to the symptoms you reported (feeling happy and then sad and low, crying for no reason) it is possible that you might be experiencing bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is a condition in which a constant mood change between happiness and sadness occurs.

Mood stabilizers are given to reduce the mood shifts. They include: lithium, carbamazepine and lamotrigine.

There are several types of bipolar disorder. There are small, but significant differences between them, which are best noticed by a psychiatrist.

Therefore, you might want to visit a psychotherapist for evaluation, continuous observation, and adequate therapy.

i sometimes feel the same way. I can be really happy one minute then feel low the next, but it happens only once or so a week. Just recently ( a month ago) my cousin who is 18 just got diagnosed with bipolar disorder, i dont think i have it but i am afraid i can get it. Does anyone know if bipolar disorder is genetic?

Yes, mental illness is genetic but just because your cousin has it doesn't mean you do. Many people have some mood swings. I wouldn't stress over it.
