Q: Anxiety and panic disorders
asked by: DoctorQuestion on May 21st, 2008
Doctor Question
Whats wrong with me?
The symptoms are as follows:
I feel like breathing is just not doing what it is supposed to
body tingles like it's almost vibrating
arms are fatigued like I've held a 50 pound weight for 10 mins
face tingles
tonight i raised up in the bed and saw blood vessels in my eyes
my head hurts kind of but not like a headache
my chest gets tight but no pain
i get nervous and i shake from being scared
My upper body gets HOT not like a burning sensation on the skin but deep within my body like heat and it radiates outward down my arms and up through my head
This always happens when I'm in bed.I have to get up and sit and wait for it to go away.My DR diagnosed me with anxiety and panic disorder.I'm not on any meds for this.I disagree with this diagnosis.I had an EKG about 3 mos ago and was normal and didn't show any signs of anything whatsoever.Thank you
Rita

Have been told it is anxiety and panic disorder....i don't agree with this diagnosis

When someone feels certain symptoms, the doctor’s task is to check them. For example: if you “feel like breathing is just not doing what it is supposed to” doctor will check your respiratory system to see what is wrong. He will auscultate you, first, and then if he assumes something, he will make additional diagnostic procedures like a chest X-ray, lung functional tests, oximetry, ECG, provocation tests etc. The type of diagnostic procedures depends upon the type of reported symptoms. If examinations do not confirm your subjective symptoms (everything is OK) then the problem is probably in your mind not in the lungs, heart, muscles, or elsewhere.

People usually find it difficult to accept that they don’t have a real organic disease but only mental problem. There is a type of anxiety disorder called somatoform disorder or hypochondria where the patient feels symptoms of various diseases without really having them. That is the nature of their mental illness – asking for a disease. So they visit many doctors searching for a disease. The cause of such a mental disorder is placed deeply in their personality and sub-consciousness. Panic disorder is another type of neurotic disorder where the patient feels symptoms of non-existing diseases (usually a severe one like a heart attack or stroke) and react on them very dramatically.

You can ask for a second opinion to confirm or exclude if you really had an organic disorder or not. If the result is the same (everything OK) you can ask for help from a mental health doctor.
