Q: Antibiotics and birth control ?

Ok, my dentist put me on the antibiotic Keflex (cephalexin) 3 or 4 weeks ago. I had been taking it, and not realizing that it would affect my birth control pills (i take Yaz), I had unprotected sex (no condom) during ovulation. That was 5 days ago. My doctor told me to stop taking the birth control pills because I could be pregnant. So I stopped taking them 3 or 4 days ago and now I am bleeding and cramping like a period. I took a pregnancy test and it came up negative but I know I took it way too early. Is there still a possibility I am pregnant? If I'm definitely not pregnant, should I start taking my birth control pills again?

yes there is a possibility you are pregnant. because antibiotics affect the pill. of course since you didnt know that, you didnt know not to have unprotected sex. i would wait until a few days before your period is due to come to take a pregnanct test. and then take it from there to determine what you want to do. your doctor should have gone over that with you when you got on birth control though. i would ask your doctor why he or she never told you about interfering medications before you started on the pill because that's a major subject to be discussed when deciding what birth control is right for you.

I would say that the doctor didn't discuss the fact that antibiotics interfere wirh birth control becuase it is not a proven fact. and what happens almost always when you stop taking your pills mid pack is period like bleeding and cramping. You do have a chance of being pregnant becauase nothing is 100% but don't stress too much over it and just wait a week and a half and test again, you should be able to get an accurate resault by then.
