Q: Antibiotics and Birth Control Pills

I recently had surgery to fix a broken ankle. (Loads of fun. Crying or Very sad ) They gave me a quantity of antibiotics in the hospital to prevent infection. I'm on a low dose birth control pill and I know antibiotics reduce the effectiveness of the pills. My husband and I are NOT ready to get pregnant, so we are using condoms for now to be safe, but I was curious...How long should we wait before the pills are back to full effectiveness? I'm not on any antibiotics now and it has been a week since the surgery (and I've stayed faithfully on the pill). So when can we go back to "au natural"? Very Happy

I'm pretty sure a week after your last dosage of antibiotics is when you're protected again as long as you continue to faithfullly take them Very Happy

Hi! I am a Certified Pharmacy Technician. You are protected with in 24 hours of taking your last antibiotic pill. So if it's a week later you are for sure fine! The only time you are not protected within 24 hours is with a zpak or a tripak these are in your system for a total of 10 days. So I hope this helps and hope the ankle is doing well!! Smile
