hi my name is emily. im 14 years old and im pretty sure im anorexic. when im hungry ill just drink lots of water and eventually im not hungry any more. occasionally about 3 times a week ill eat a special k 90 calorie bar. after that i feel so dissapointed in myself becasue i like being hungry and keeping myself from eating it gives me control of something in my life. and thats the only thing i can control my parents are so strict they never let me do anything i ussually just work go to school and play sports. i love playing sports it gives me something to accomplish in my life. no one knows about my problem (and yes i know its a problem). i cant tell my best friend cause i know she just wont take it well. and i definitley cant tell my parents, sisters, or anyone else in my family. they'll just be to disappointed in me and i cant feel like ive failed anyone or anything.

Emily,
I understand that you believe you are struggling with anorexia and don't feel comfortable telling anyone about it. Based on the behavior you described, you may be suffering from anorexia. There are a number of criteria used in diagnosing anorexia, including refusal to maintain a minimally normal body weight, being intensely afraid of gaining weight, and exhibiting a significant disturbance in the perception of the size or shape of your body. In addition, women with anorexia who have already gotten their period stop getting it for at least 3 consecutive months. Whether or not you qualify for a diagnosis, your eating habits sound dangerous. I would encourage you to tell your doctor or seek out a therapist who can provide you with treatment confidentially. I understand that you are worried about disappointing your family, but you may want to try telling one person because it is likely they will want to help you. Given that eating disorders tend to be harder to treat the longer they go on, you may want to seek help immediately.
