87Princess,
There are many, many things which can cause pain around the ankle. Did the podiatrist (foot doctor or DPM) give you any idea of what was going on?
You do not state where your pain in located. Is it anteriorly over the ankle joint, or under the malleoli ("ankle bones"), or posteriorly under the Achilles tendon? Do you have any other symptoms, such as clicking, catching, popping, instability, decreased range of motion, etc, etc?
The two most common causes of discomfort around the ankle include trauma (one time or repetitive) and inflammatory disorders (such as tendonitis, bursitis, or arthritis). Of course, there are many other less common etiologies.
But, without being able to examine the joint, it is not really possible to tell you what exactly is going on. If the problem continues or worsens, you may want to see an orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon.
Good luck.
