Q: Anemia in children

My son has had a Complete Blood Test and these are the results

WBC 12.7, RBC 4.53, Hgb 11.5, Hct 33.6 MCV 74.2, MCH 25.4, MCHC 34.3, Plt 348, LY# 1.5, LY% 11.5

Can you please tell me the meaning of these in a layman's langauge.

Does it mean i have to buy supplementary vitamins
What should i do

It is impossible to interpret these numbers without knowing the age of your child and what the clinical conditions were when the blood was drawn, (was your child sick or not).


While it may seem that your child is mildly anemic, these numbers may be normal for an infant or young toddler. Values also vary from lab to lab. You should discuss these results with your pediatrician.


You may not be able to understand the significance of each value, but you are entitled to know if they are normal and if not, what appropriate actions you should take.
