Q: Anal bleeding and possible causes
asked by: DoctorQuestion on November 11th, 2008
Jan. I had lower left abdominal pain. I have a high tolerance for pain but knew something was wrong since I couldnt move my bowels. Went to the ER and was diasnosed with Diverticulitus. Was admited for a few days with IV and no food & water. Discharged and few weeks later had a colonoscopy. Found to have diverticula and was told I had Diverticulosis. A month later pain came back, was put on meds again and scheduled for surgery. I had a left partial colectomy in April 2008. I am 37 years old. Two weeks ago I had nothing but diarhea for about 6 days. It was follwed with bleeding. Was admitted for one day to the check blood levels which were fine. Discharged and scheduled a colonoscpy next week. I think I have a partial large instestine blockage but they think just a fissure? I have constant abdominal aching, cannot move bowels but have constant pressure and when I try, nothing but red blood is in the toliet. I now have left pain in my back & maybe pass a small piece of feces but blood

Digestive and Bowel Disorders Answer A4855
Current medical status: bleeding from anus, abdominal pain, pain in left side
Current medical treatment: Scheduled for a colonsocopy-past left partial colectomy

Diverticulitis could be the reason for your symptoms (abdominal cramps, diarrhea, bloody feces…) but other bowel disorders (inflammation, cancer…) can also cause the same symptoms. That’s why doctors scheduled you for another colonoscopy. A colonoscopy is the most accurate method for exploring the bowels.

Intestinal blockage can be manifested with abdominal cramps but not with diarrhea.

Blood in the feces can originate from an anal fissure but other more serious conditions should be excluded first. Don’t miss the scheduled colonoscopy!
