Amoxicillin Rash - Now Allergic?
Posted: 07-23-05 03:06am

In september of 2003 my throat had been swollen and I had white patches on it. It was the long labor day weekend so I went to the emergency room and they tested me for strep throat. The test came back negative and they put me on amoxicillin.

A few days later I wasn’t getting any better so I made an appointment with my primary doctor. She sent me for a mono test, which came back positive. I was then told to stop my amoxicillin since it might cause a rash. I had started taking it on saturday, I was now being told this on wednesday and that next saturday I broke out in an itchy rash that covered my whole body and lasted weeks.

This june I went to back to my primary doctor with ear and eye problems. She diagnosed me with a sinus infection and gave me amoxicillin. I told her what happened before when I had mono and took it. She said the rash happened then because I had mono at the time.

For the sinus infection I had to take two pills three times a day (six total.) it was later in the day so I only took four when I got home from the doctors. The next morning I woke up and my hands and feet felt sunburned. They wore sore and red, as it got later in the day they began to itch. In the following days my whole body broke out in a rash. My feet and ankles swelled and turned purple. The weather was really hot, and it made me even more uncomfortable. I was so itchy; the rash was everywhere, bottoms of my feet, on my ears, in my scalp. And again it lasted weeks. I only took four pills.

I never had a reaction to amoxicillin before I was given it during mono. Could the mono somehow have changed my body, making it allergic to amoxicillin?

I dono about the allergic thing, but I got the rash too cuz the dum caca doctor thought I had strep throat when even when I told him I thought it was mono. Kinda stupid that they would even allow people to take amoxicillin when theres a chance of mono. But ya that rash was the worst thing of my life. I stayed up for 24 hours one time becuase it itched so bad and I couldnt go to sleep and I felt like I was going mentally insane. But I do know that some people can randomly become allergic to things, I dono if this can cause it tho.

you can become allergic to amoxicillin even if you've taken it many times before. I'm verrrry allergic to bactrim (another antibiotic). I took it once before and noticed nothing, but I took just one dose of it the last time I took it and I itched/shook horribly/had headaches/and had a high fever. If it was the mono that caused it, it wouldn't have happened after that.. Only while you had mono. Sometimes you can build up a tolerance of sorts to medicines where the body can no longer accept them, thus causing the rash/reaction. I've been allergic from things such as hair dye to the eye drops given to dilate your eyes. All of which I had previously done, but there was just that one time where my body couldn't take it anymore.

I Had This Problem

A few years ago. It's uncomfortable just to think about it--- really ruined my year, and the docs kept perscribing me more antihistamines, which kept me really drowsy but did nothing for the horrible itching. It took several months for any doc to find out what was wrong, and I went to quite a few.

I'm not a professional, but it does seem possible that your body still has some sort of virus it it, especially a variant of epstein-barr virus. Mono is self-limiting (it dies by itself after a while) but I think some other strains of the virus may stick around longer, possibly causing things like chronic fatigue syndrome. Best of luck to you.

Yep, It Was the Mono

I read after the doc thought I had mono and was waiting for the results that if you take any of the amoxcillin's, that you can become allergic to it! Sure enough the amoxcillin I was taking for the sinus infection & streph throat made me break out & itch! Now it's on my chart that I am allergic to them! It does change your body's defense to amoxcillin some how!

I will never let them give it to me again now!

Mono/amoxicillin

I had the identical thing happen to me.
I was given Amoxicillin when I was 17 and misdiagnosed with a strep infection. I actually had mono, and promply developed a rash.
I tried to take amoxicillin about 5 yrs after that and again broke out.
I assumed I somehow developed an allergy (but I'm not sure if this is really the mechanism).
Now I'm 35 and was giving my toddler some amoxicillin last night, and without thinking I licked my finger where one drop of her medicine had dripped on me, and again broke out. Its 24 hours later and with benedryl and prednisone and there is no improvement. And the distribution of the rash is so odd, my armpits, the front side of my arms, my groin and behind my knees!!!
I really would like to know what the mechanism of this rash is. Is this a true allergy, or is it still related to the mono somehow? Are other penicillins ok to take? Apparently, this is not ever going to go away.

Mono Rash Reply

I was told that I cannot take any of the amoxicillins. Those are wierd places to get a rash? I would search it on the internet. I had to take diflucon recently for a yeast infection in my mouth(long story there) and after the second pill my face got really red and broke out in welts! Someone else told me that there is amoxicillin products in it? That is the first time that has ever happened to me. I have other allergies and the rashes are usually on my thighs and stomach. I now tell doctors that I am allergic to amoxcillins and to list it on my record!

Let me know how it goes!

Mono/amoxicillin

My 15 year old son went to his doctor with fever, throat pain and ear pain. Doc prescribed amoxicillin which he has taken for 9 of the 10 days recommended. This morning he woke up covered in spots from head to toe (including the inside of his mouth, nose and ears - and even on the palms of his hands!) I brought him back in to the Dr. this am and they did a finger prick test for mono. He explained to me that taking any "cillin" based meds (amoxicillin, penicillin and ampicillin) can cause this rash. He gave orders for bloodwork to include liver enzyme test as this may be elevated due to the mono. He then instructed me to look up this website and to my suprise there are other people with the same symptoms. Now we have to wait a couple of days for blood results. In the meantime I guess there is nothing he can take for the itch but tylenol. He just had braces put on his teeth 2 days before the onset of the sore throat and fever. Every time he has his teeth cleaned or any dental work, seems he always has a sore mouth and throat for a few days after. I wont let him take amoxicillin anymore, and i think i will reconsider the latex gloves on his next visit to dentist just in case.

Mono/amoxicillin

you all realize this rash thing has a name: it's called STEVENS JOHNSON SYNDROME and is very serious. google it so you get a better understanding of what your body is doing. it is an allergic reaction but it can be life threatening (obviously not for folks able to enter here) but you need to know what you're dealing with. my son just got out of five days in the hospital after a positive mono test and a sudden onset on the rash (in his case the mono virus itself triggered this allergic reaction) what is happening on your skin is also happening to your throat and other internal mucus membranes (sometimes eyes, etc.). please see your doctor if it gets to wear you can't swallow your own spit. that's what happened to my son. don't take this lightlybut if you do have a light case please know there are some suggestions to help with the itching. steriods, benadryl and ice cold compresses on the affected area (see my earlier blogs) under "mono rash." laura-lynne powell, sacramento, ca

Not Amoxicillian Rash......leukemia Instead
Posted: 11-12-07 07:51am

thanks for the emails....they diagnosed my son with mono after the rash episode and sent him for labs. Labs revealed low red blood and platelet counts and high white cell count. Doc gave him prednisone shot and oral pills for 2 wks, we ended up in ER with fever and chest pain. Turned out his spleen and liver were enlarged. Followed up again with primary doc who referred us to infectious disease, who then referred us to hemotology/oncology of Nemours Childrens clinic. His platelet count went down to 9 (should be 150-450 thousand) He was directly admitted into Arnold Palmer Hospital where they did bone marrow biopsy and aspiration and confirmed that he had ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia) He just turned 16 one month ago. So, for the next 3 years he will undergo numerous BM biopsies, aspirations and spinals as well as the tons of chemo. He has lost 20 lbs, didn't need to he is 5'9" and at 125 now. He has completed his "induction" phase of chemo, now beginning "intesification" phase today. He gets a break from aspiration and biopsy this week, just spinal, with chemo. Hope he doesn;t get another spinal headache....ouch...lots of caffeine, bedrest and tylenol 3. Anyway, this is certainly keeping us busy, but i will check in at another time.....thanks....
