Q: Amoxicillin dental prescription

My dentist gave me a 24 capsule prescription of 500mg amoxicillin for an upcoming dentist visit. i know from prior experience i am to take 4 capsules an hour before the visit.

My questions are: I have more capsules than i can use, and i have a few chipped teeth that i am worried about getting bacteria in, would there be a way i can take some of the pills leading up to the visit to fight off any bacteria that may get in? I may be worrying too much but i'm afraid of bacteria getting in my system and causing heart failure.

IF bacteria were in my system previous to the visit, will the meds take care of it or does it just work for what gets in after you take it?

are there any signs to look for as far as bacteria getting in the tooth?

thanks in advance.

Amoxicillin before/after dental procedures.
I'm taking that now before any future dental procedure/surgery myself, but less times a day for a week. I read somewhere that they prescribe before and after--before so the bacteria that has been infecting you mouth isn't there. And then I suppose you take it right after just in case bacteria was introduced during the surgery. With this buffer of pills, it should nix the bacteria before it really infects the heart. That is what I read since I was looking for an answer.

This is usually done for dental visits after limb replacement...I know my husband takes this for life for his hip replacement...I am leary of filling up on medication....I would fear that you could build up your own resistance in case of infection...

Call your pharmacist on this...They are the most knowledgeable person to answer this question....Good luck...

The American Heart Association has changed the guidelines for premedication. I suggest you look at their website and see if you have any of the conditions listed that it is now required for. If you do you should only take 4 tabs one hour prior to the appt. If he/she gave you more it may be just so you have it for future visits.

As far as your chipped tooth concerns. Unless your teeth are broken into the nerve area (and you would know from the excrutiating pain if they are) the bacteria isnt going to get anymore into your blood stream then everyday brushing/flossing causes.
